Did a search and found others also have that infamous "rattle." Mine seems to be coming from the passenger side, not sure if it's front or rear. I've been under it a few times and can't find anything loose.

Anyone figure out where it's coming from or just living with it?

catalytic converter heat shield?

He knows about that one, but I would hit the back of the passenger seat up near the head rest. My seat rattles empty and it sounds like it’s coming from where you describe.

Ditto...doesn't do it when the seat is folded forward...only in the upright position when empty. I have tried several different things including wrapping tape around the bar that the striker grabs to tighten it; as well as a couple other things...all to no avail.

Most of my rattles come from misc. crap in the door pockets. Then of course you have the leather creaking. And the rattle associated with the child seat that I can't get rid of. Not too many rattles that I'm not responsible for though.

My 2005 started rattling at 1K miles. The driver side door panel.. dealer replaced everything and fixed that rattle for now. The rattle in the rear is somewhere behind the rear seats.. at first I thought it was the mechanism that latches the seat in place. But now I think it may be coming from the plastic panels close to the rear seats on the passenger side.

Drives me nuts, constant rattling...

And its not the head rests or the leather... I checked those out and found if you hit the top of the head rests hard it locks them down in place tight against the top of the seats.

This is plastic or sheetmetal rattling.

I did noticed one of the plastic fasteners inside the side panel near the rear door keeps popping out and allowing the panel to possibly vibrate against something... as long as the rattles continue driving me crazy, I'll do the same to Toyota until the rattles are gone.

I've never had a new vehicle that rattled. I've had it back twice for this problem... the dealer is trying their best, but after the forth time Toyota IS getting a letter to start the process--in my opinion, it diminishes the resale value.

I would like to trade it in on an 2006-07 LX... obviously with some negotiations using my rattle trap.

Mine was the heat shields. You can have your dealer replace them, but some people have had success clamping them with hose clamps.

I've only briefly crawled under there to look, but I know it's my heat shields rattling. Has anybody tried having them welded at a muffler shop? I'm not even sure if this is practical, because I'm not sure where/why they rattle...

Does replacing them solve the problem?

I'm watching this thread because I have an undercarriage rattle that is not the cat shield either. Took a mallet and tapped all around and still can't find it.

On my NSX, the rattle turned out to be the honeycomb element inside the catalytic converter. I think the heat just ate it up.

I don't have rattles , but I have an annoying "tick" coming from under the steering wheel somewhere. It only happens going down the road- meaning I can turn the wheel back and forth at a stop and no sounds what-so-ever. It might be a relay or something associated with the suspension, but I haven't had a chance to take it in yet. I know when i do, there probably going to say- We could find it- because it is such a slight tick. They shouldn't have made the LC so quiet inside.

I also have severe "heat' ticks from underneath. I'm assuming this is normal.

I am watching this thread too, because the 90 series Prados have that same exact rattle. Two Prados I test drove when I bought mine suffered from the same rattle.

I've noticed that it stops if I move the seat rails forward one position. But somehow someone always manages to push the seat all the way forward and it appears again.

I've got the cold exhaust heat shield buzz/rattle (couldn't find anything loose), the subtle squeak under certain steering wheel slight on-center turn conditions from the combi switch assy (behind the steering wheel - couldn't find anything loose - its inside the combi switch, probably the clock spring lead), the rattling crap in the door pockets and anywhere else it happens to be, the rattle from the car seat...am I missing anything?

Used to get really worked up about the rattles, but I guess that's ONE area I'm mellowing out about with age...not too concerned about them. It's still a damn fine vehicle, all in all. I choose to view the rattles as just harmless quirks developing with increasing vehicle age - they add character to a fine old friend, now.

I have had a tinny sounding rattle at about 2k RPM for a few weeks. Sounded like a heat shield and sure enought it was. One of the six points where the catalytic converter clamshell heat shield is joined has rusted through on the drivers side. A pair of large hose clamps fit around and tightened it up nicely just this morning. No more rattle. I'll wait 'til the whole exhaust system rusts off and replace everything.

Anyone using a stainless exhaust? The only one I have seen is from Borla, but I don't particularly want the Racer Boy dual chrome tips. I just want something that will last.

Your heat ticking is normal. I suggest for the steering tick that only occurs while driving that you get a good looking girl to put her head between your legs while you are driving to see if she can find the tick. If something else comes "UP". she can take care of that also :)

Guess I'm lucky on my old 99 with 64K miles, I don't have any rattles. I do have on a cold morning leather rubbing but that is normal. My LC lived in AZ all its life and the bottom looks like new (no rust). Hope that continues, knoock on wood.

I believe the OEM exhaust is stainless steel but it's a nonferrous stainless steel and will have surface rust.

Sorry I haven’t been around a while, been working with another group at work & been very busy.
What I meant to say was to make the front seat wiggle, by hitting the back near the headrest. You can also sit in the back seat and shake the seat to see if it’s causing the rattle.
Mine is caused from a plastic glide that has come loose on the seat track.
Hope you find your rattle.

check the front passenger door...hit the top of the door panel with your fist and see if you get the noise. that's where mine is...

^+1, I had to fix mine too.

What do you have on your key ring? Sometimes that can make a noise???
