Hey Guys, I wanted to go ahead and get this thread going so we can make some loose plans if y'all are ready. Please tag all the others who may be able to join us. Would be bada** to roll up to HIH with a pack of us!!

My vote (and please please please voice your opinions, its not all about me!!) would be to stay the night in Santa Rosa (or Santa Fe) to shorten up the day 2 drive and enjoy the afternoon to set up camp in Silverton. If this were the case, I would likely meet you guys in Santa Rosa, as 287 to I40 is my most efficient route. We can also discuss route specifics in here if you'd like. I am coming from Dallas, so Big Spring may be a hair out of my way, but I can meet up elsewhere along the route.

No major rush here to make plans but just wanted to get this thread set up.

@TXSunDevil
@geanes
@Ouray19
@aaronrules (I know you are coming from AR but may be able to meet on I40)
@planomateo (I know you may be time-sensitive around HIH but wanted to include you anyways)

Big Spring was suggested as a meeting point for those coming in on IH20. If there is nobody on that road than we do not need a rally point there. Santa Fe shows to be the long way to Silverton but I will defer to those who have taken that road. I think Wednesday night 7/11 somewhere along IH40 is a good idea. Anywhere from Morality to Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa is not too far out of my way coming from South TX. Things to consider are drive time to Silverton on the 12th. Check in is from 1-4p MST. Santa Rosa may be a 7 hour drive on the 12th so that means everyone needs to be on the road by 9am at the latest to ensure we arrive on time. Moriarity would be an hour closer the second day but longer the 1st.

Good point, Santa Fe will add drive time for all of us. I think I-40 makes a lot of sense for a comfortable time frame on the 12th for check in. I.E. won't need to be on the road by 6-7am. I'm fine with anything from Moriarty to Santa Rosa as well.

I've done the drive from Durango to santa fe.....its not quick by any means. Great point I didn't even think about it.

BIG fan of Santa Fe (food is fantastic). The Day2 route on the 12th could head north up 84 thru Chama and then Pagosa Springs. 160 West from there to Durango and then 550 North to Silverton. 5 hours approx to cover the 261 miles. Big fan of knocking out as much mileage as possible on Day 1 so Day 2 is more relaxing. Just MHO.

Yeah It'll make for a long Day 1 to do Santa Fe, but it is a really really nice town, and if folks want to camp theres a really nice site on the way up to the ski basin. I think 5 hours is a good estimate.

100% agree with the "knock out as much as possible on day 1" sentiment. Though I do understand those with kiddos may have a harder time with that.

We are going to push hard on Wednesday and get to ABQ/Santa Fe to stay the night in a hotel even though we will be towing a camper. From ABQ/Santa Fe we could pick up @marcfj60 depending on what his plans are. Unless he is living in Colorado by then, @DirtDawg should come along.

Keep me in the loop. Not sure what my plans are yet. There are several folks from ABQ that have registered. @Ramathorn15

How do the SA and Austin guys feel about Santa Fe? I know its a haul...

Even if it's just from Santa Fe to Silverton, we might be able to be in ABQ/Santa Fe at the same time and drive in from there.

Santa Fe is about 50 minutes north of Albuquerque and I-40. The best route to Silverton from ABQ or Santa Fe is to take Hwy 550 from just north of ABQ up through Bloomfield and then Durango. You'll need to plan for a 40-minute backtrack back south on I-25 from SF to get to 550. There are other routes north and west from SF that are very scenic but a little less direct and slower than 550.

Both times we went it was the 550 route. The fact that it hits Durango is pretty nice for that "oh crap" thing you forgot to bring with you!

I think we would go thru ABQ if we did Santa Rosa, so we could easily get a big group for day 2 regardless of where we folks spend the night.

Thanks for the tip. This does make me think something like Moriarty would be a good choice.

Good news is regardless we will hit durango!

HA! yeah I didn't think about that. I've looked some other routes because I HATE I-40, I think no matter what we would have to take all the way to Amarillo, and then it's backroad highways from there. We will more than likely take 40 again though.

With my kids, Santa Fe may be asking a bit much. But what my truck can do is get up early Thursday morning, and play "catch up" if we need to. Meet y'all before you pull out of Santa Fe, stretch the legs, get a cup of joe, then get back on the road with you guys. That may be the secret for us, roundin' up early Thursday morning. And honestly, not too worried about the Wednesday caravan as much as I am about about making the drive with you guys over the passes and into Silverton together.

Worst case, we could all coordinate and meet in Durango and head up all together in a really sweet caravan. Roll into Silverton with TX flags on our rigs :)
