testing my new Yaesu 857d and ATAS-120

Here are some pics of the test I was running before the final install of the Radio Equipment.

In this one You can see the mounting location for the VHF antenna for the my ICOM V8000.

Other than the 857 I also have an ICOM V8000, that will be installed year round, the 857 will be mounted whenever I go to a DxPedition or whern I want to activate certain spots, in Venezuela.

I tested the ATAS 120 at speed on the highway and it behaves perfectly, a lot less movement that I expected. I may finally settle to intall it on the rear of the 80.

I have done any more tests because I have found it a little hard to aquire the braided grounding for the base of the Antenna.

SWR was near perfect in all bands. in UHF it was a little highter but none the less it was withtin limits.

Glad to see you found a setup that works for mobile HF.

I keep on playing around with mounting my 857d in the truck but for now I just keep it in the back with a few HF antenna options. One of these days I will figure out where to mount another radio and antenna.

I just installed the Yaesu ATAS-120a antenna.
Wish the rest (main radio, wiring) was as easy as this
It took less than thirty seconds to take off the Diamond antenna and replace it with the new one.



'Tis big, but not to big.
The antenna itself is a lot flimsier than the Diamond, so I am sure it is going to be whipping around a lot.
I have not taken the beast for a drive yet, so I am not sure how much whipping it will do.
Maybe not that much...

Yes, that is tree spooge on the hood, in fact the whole rig is covered with it.
A combo of dirt, tree crap from home and work, dew, space time continuum fallout, ect.
To cold to wash the rig by hand, will have to take it to a coin op sometime to knock it down to clean paint.

I am in the middle of an install with the Yaesu 857D radio.
I still need to install the radio and wire it, but I did get the faceplate mounted up a few weeks back.

I used an existing mount in the rig which was for an iPod, cell phone, or GPS.

I took off the grip pod part of it, and much to my delight, the Yaesu faceplate kits holes line up perfectly with the holes in the Panavice mount.
I can even move it around for different configurations, and the holes still align up.

Picture one here shows the Panavice mount only with the grip pod off of it.



Picture two shows the Yaesu remote faceplate mount bolted to the Panavice mount.



Picture three shows the Yaesu 857D faceplate mounted to the remote mount.
It is a perfect reach for me to reach out to adjust the radio.



Not sure when I will get the time to take out the passenger seat and install the radio and wire it all up.
I am taking my time on this install since I do not even have my license yet.
The next phase to get all the wiring done and radio installed is going to be a long one.
