The USFS announced the closure of trails 2, 7, 9, and portions of 8 in the Tellico OHV area for a period of one year beginning 01 January 08. The closures came in response to pressure from Trout Unlimited (TU) to close the trails due to excessive silting resulting from rain water run-off. TU claims that the silting endangered, and was killing, the native trout population(s) in the remote streams located in Tellico.
Typically, trails that are closed under circumstances such as these are never reopened. Check the link in the Land Use section of Mud for the full story.
Keep in mind that the Southern4WD assn and STLCA are fighting an uphill battle with this as TU has deep pockets and access unlimited legal representation through Ted Turner of CNN fame. You can help by making a donation to 'Save Tellico'.
It is a sad day in the Off Road community and a great loss to 4-wheeling as a whole along the east coast.

Did we get a land management rep yet? Sounds like we really need one before we lose Rausch too.

Really makes me wish I was able to get to Telico last year. I hope I can make the trip before there are more closures.

I responded to an inquiry yesterday about the land-use liason position for ALCA......

but we should all be Land Use Liasons....... but I am working on that as you can tell : )
