Looking for someone that can drill and tap the output shaft of an sm465 transmission (with shaft in the case).*

I've tried one in Durham and one in Raleigh. Shop in raleigh did this for a friend/fellow MUD member 4 years ago but now says he can't figure out how to do it(after my trans sat at his shop for 3 weeks). I guess they just don't want to mess with it. His excuse was his brand new carbide bit couldn't even stratch it. BS

I'm getting frustrated as this one thing is holding up the rest of my build.*

Willing to drive almost anywhere in the state of NC if anyone knows of a place...

Am I nuts trying to find someone to do this???

He-man machine in TN cut down the output on a th400 and resplined it to fit a D300, without removing it from the case for one of my friends, give him a call.....Ryan@931.635.3255

Thanks, if an option I found this afternoon fails like my previous two I will give him a call.

Just curious, Why would you want the output drilled and tapped?

I'm adapting the sm465 to an Orion case. I need a bolt and washer the hold the input gear of the case to the trans output shaft.

I had a hell of a time with mine. Took it to two ships neither could do it and talked me into letting them weld a stud on the out put which of course failed when I tightened it up. Ended up drilling it with a hand drill and hand taping was only hard right at the surface maybe because it had been welded on. Anyway only took one bit I did do it in three sizes stepping it up each time. And broke one tap which was a cheap one got a good one and it was still not super easy to tap but took it slow cost for bits and good tap about 50 bucks

I talked to Poser yesterday and looks like the trouble the first two shops probably had was not heating the shaft.

Third shop (which has it now) will take a torch to it first and then drill.

I had a friend of mine put the main shaft in a lathe and did it for me. You can disassemble those trans very easily. Dont need a press or anything special. How are you going to locate the gear once it is on the shaft? In other words the bolt and washer will keep in from coming off but what are you using to keep it from sliding toward the trans and rubbing on the case? I know that a few places machine a stop on the shaft just for this reason. I was able to find several thicknesses of washers that worked for me.

I'm going the thick washer route so the gear doesn't walk toward the trans and clearance the case.

ok guys this is simple. i did it for my friend. you need

drill press
the right drill bit. some odd ball like 37/64 just making a number up cant remember what it is? i'll asl my bud after work and the right tap???
-torches

i took the table off my stand up drill press and sat the bellhousing w/ tranny still attached directly on the base of the drill press, output shaft pointing up. lined up the drill bit. heated the shaft until glowing red and drilled away. peice of cake! then i put the tap into the chuck of the drill press and unplugged the drillpress for safety. and manually turned the chuck while applying downward pressuse as if you were drilling. 2 people will make the job easier. once the tap is started by a few turns and is nice and straight you can release it from the chuck and do the rest by hand. finished look was as good as a 5 star machine shop. my buddys cruiser has never had a problem with it. cheers!

ofcourse he but in a pin into one the splines and drilled the washer on the output shaft. might be a lock washer involved too? i will ask him if he has any photos

Good info.

Drill bit is 33/64 if using a 9/16 - 8 bolt.

i was close:)
