How far from the dashboard should the telescopic steering wheel extend on a '02 LX470? Are there any adjustments to this?

I think this is an interesting question ... we test drove an '03 today and my wife is not happy with how 'not'-low the steering wheel can drop and thought the telescoping could be further.

Do all models automatically retract the wheel when the keys are pulled out? I think it is sort of a silly/frilly feature ... and I assume is prone to wear out since it happens EVERY time the key is taken out/inserted.

Yes, I would like to see more travel in the steering wheel, but the seat is very flexible, to the overall result of the adjustments in the LC/LX has been acceptable to me.

The dealer can set the steering wheel so it does not retract. Yes, it is a wear point.

Yeah, I "adjusted" my '99 to not telescope any more, after setting it where I wanted it (full-extend).

(Disconnected the telescoping drive motor connector.)

It had started shuddering during telescoping motion, when it was a year or two old. Had in under warranty several times; dealers claimed they changed parts to newer design stuff, etc., but the problem always returned.

Finally, after it was out of warranty, and after I tried relubing etc. but not rebuilding the thing, I just disconnected the dang motor. (Never had a use for the telescoping function anyway.)

There are a few bells & whistles on the LX that I could do without, and this is one of them.

I had the dealer disable the retracting feature on my wheel, too. Just set it to where you like it and hit the memory button. The dual seating memory is one of the nice features of the LX over the LC, esp. if one driver is tall and the other short like in my case.

I also had the door locks changed so they don't automatically unlock when the vehicle is put into park (had a close call w/ a stranger who jumped in front of one of my other cars (probably wanting money) just as I shut off the engine in a grocery store parking lot in Jan in a not-so-good area of town in the dark [that's just about everywhere in the city of Tucson]). I slammed the door shut, started the engine, and took off. Also, I have the doors lock automatically when the vehicle hits 13mph, had the moonroof programmed so it wouldn't open if I held the unlock button on the remote key down (windows will still lower, though this can also be disabled).

There's a whole bunch of stuff you can have programmed. Hoser posted a link to a pdf not too long ago.

I recently purchased a 2002 LC, and thought it would have a telescoping wheel (not to mention programmable seat adjustments). Are these options that I somehow missed out on?

A not-so-known trick on the telescoping wheel is that if you put it all the way in any direction(i.e all the way down) and then click the toggle 5 times more down quickly it will move down further. This will work in any dirction and is a big improvement over the standard range of movement. It is a trick that i read about on here a while ago.

Resurrecting an old post because I had not seen this information posted anywhere else. I was able to make the steering wheel extend maybe one centimeter 4 extra times. If you are still here, thank you for that info. Ive wanted this for years! My back is now saved a bit more.
