Anybody know anything about putting TBI in a 22R? Is it possible? If so, how difficult and is it worth it? My carbed 22R just doesn't have the giddyup I want, but I don't want to spring for a 4.3L unless I have to. I have stock 4:10s, but am running 31's, so isn't that closer to a 3:56 ratio? So, I guess if installing TBI isn't an option, what gears would let me run 33's with the stock 22R??????

No need for for TBI when the 22RE EFI engines are a dime a dozen... I'm sure there's web info on swapping that EFI system onto the 22R.

33"ers 4.88 would be best.

True, but my 22R is remanufactured with only 25K on it, bored .030 over, and really strong (for a 4 banger). I'll check into the EFI system though, thanks for the gear info.

I think Brian is talking about just swapping the Fuel injection stuff over to your engine. IIRC, the manifolds are interchangeable, so you just need a harness and a 6 pack

AHHHHHHHHHh, I think I have the idea now. Thanks!!

If you're really set on a GM TBI look for a 2.5L 4 banger from one of the GM cars. I know they were in Camaros, Firebirds, S10s and a bunch of Pontiac cars...but in the end the Toyota EFI stuff is way better...

Any input on the harness needs? Does the whole rig need to be rewired? I'd rather keep the 22R. What about performance? What kind of increases can I expect??

I'm not real sure on the numbers, but IIRC the rig in my avatar w/22R had 96 Hp. My 94 4runner with 22RE had 116 or so. Your rig probably runs a little hotter than stock but you can expect about the same difference in horsepower by converting to EFI.

You don't need to rewire to the whole rig. Finding a donor in a junkyard would be the easiest. you will need at least the engine harnes and the ecu, the manifold and everything that attaches to it, either the efi pump or another high pressure pump because the mech one can't keep up, dizzy, exhaust manifold, and possibly the cam. I know that the cams wee different in the efi motors and i am not sure how it will run with the 22r cam, I'd take it too and swap it if needed. This sounds like a lot, but all of the parts are bolt on. You also may have to do a bit of harness fabrication, to get power everywhere it needs to be. ie fuel pump, ecu, o2 sensor, etc.

I don't really see that much of a gain here unless you are planning on rock crawling. I put the weber dual stage on it and was very happy with the power gains.

Anyway, the weber is an easy install, and I think that your results will be very similar.
Good luck,
Dan

Probably no serious rock crawling, just good clean fun wheeling.

Dan, let me get this straight.......you put a Weber dual-stage carb on your 22R and saw a noticable increase in HP? What about mileage? I'm figuring any increase in HP/mileage for cheap/easy mods is worth it. I'm getting about 18 mpg now, but would like to see 20 and like I mentioned before, can't push my 33's in 5th w/o regearing. Thanks!

For the money and the time, I think that the weber 32/36 is the way to go. the 38 is a little big and won't run right without a cam and header. The weber added 10-15 hp and the gas mileage stayed the same unless I romped on it quite a bit. Your best mods for the buck will be the weber carb and a header. that will give you roughly 120-130 factoring in your engine work, and with new gears you should be able to get 20-22 mpg.(only if you lay of the throttle a bit. (The gears will help keep that secondary closed) Also, 4.56 ratio would be a better combo if you are going to DD it. 4.88s would give you a bit more punch off road, but the extra hp will make up the difference off road and the higher gears will give you a bit better fuel economy without lugging the engine.
good luck,
Dan

A buddy of mine Built an adapter plate to go from a 22r Head to 22re Injection Intake manifold.. i dont know much about the process, but it suposidly bumps up compression ect..

I would check into building a 20R head to go on your motor. Higher comp. and much improved air flow. it will give you like 2000 more rpms before topping out. Drive a 20r and you'll see. I think they are a superior 4cyl. ( I have had 2 20rs and 1 22r and a v6)
Actualy I think the 4.3 would be better all around, but more work and $. I got better mileage and more power with my v6. Plus the parts costs are a little lower.

Thanks, guys!!! I'm not 100% sure, but I think I'm gonna put the EFI goodies on it!

i seen a engine that LC Engineering put together that had four carbs. I bet theyd set you up with a nice manifold, carbs and filters. With all that air and fuel flow, youll have lotsa power.
