I thought I would start a list of vibrations and the solutions. So please only contribute if you have both, and feel free to correct me if I get it wrong because most of this is just from my experience and some happen a while back.
Simple stuff that can sound really bad.
Prob: Out of round tires.
speed: high way speeds, but can be noticeable at all speeds.
Sol: replace tires
Prob: Spare tire resonating.
speed: This is irritating culprit that can pick a very narrow window and it is allot of mass so can feel really bad.
Sol: Secure it tightly.
Prob: Muffler lose and vibes against frame or tub.
speed: About any speed.
Sol: Make sure hangers are functioning properly.
Okay, here are some tougher ones.
Prob: U-Joints
speed: Depends more on loading but shows up at various speeds and has different sounds. I use loading in the context that either the engine is trying to turn the drive shaft or the wheels are trying to slow the engine. Sometimes it shows up when coasting.
Sol: Replace U-Joints. I just spoke with a 37 year drive shaft specialist and he share 2 good bits of info. They make cheap U-Joints so even if you replace them they could be bad. And they should be tight enough that you can NOT "wiggle" them by hand. Wiggle was my term, not his.
Prob: Drive shaft not phased properly.
speed: About any speed.
Sol: There are a multitude of sites that explain this, just keep in mind that if you do phase it and the vibes are still there to go back and phase it again 180 out.
Prob: Drive line geometry off. The tranny outputshaft/driveshaft angle must be equal to the driveshaft/pinion angle. Here is another way of looking at it. The tranny output and and rear axle pinion must be parallel. If you search "drive shaft phasing" you will this info as well and they will do a better job then I at explaining it.
speed: Highway speeds.
Sol: shim rear end, drop tranny, maybe both.
I am sure most of you guys know this but I couldn't sleep and thought I would start this thread. I think I am done now and if I think of anything else I will add it.
I hope this helps those of you searching, I know just finding the info on an issue is harder then fixing it.
Oh, I am sure there are a whole plethora of vibes that originate in the front axle.
Oh, forgot one.
Prob: Empty Coffee Cup.
speed: About any speed. It is random and slight and very difficult to isolate. Okay, so its more of a rattle.
Sol: Get more coffee.
