Coming from the 5th Gen 4Runner world I am not all that up to speed on these GX's in regards to the best, the worst, and the most popular when it comes to a lift. I realize that for the most part they use the same lifts as the 5th Gen but I am not sure that's accurate across the board. In the 5th Gen world, King is the best, a few run BP-51's, then Icon and Toytech along with Dobinson's and OME round out the mass majority of kits. I'll say this right now, I will never put another Icon kit on any of my vehicles so lets just forget them from the start.

This vehicle will be used to commute to work, haul dirt bikes on the weekends, run the beaches, traverse ranch roads and the occasional off-road specific event. I want something that will support front and rear bumpers with a full size spare and winch. I want it to be compliant and comfortable (as possible) while on road and hold up over time. I don't want to be rebuilding shocks every six months but I am ok with a little maintenance every few years. I will likely pair the lift with some Total Chaos UCA's if necessary for the amount of lift needed to clear the 285's. I plan to run 285/70/17's on a 17x8.5 wheel with -10mm offset and 4.30" of backspace, I have these lying around from my 4Runner and would like to use them if possible.

So with that info, what would you guys recommend? Am I missing anything here? Thanks in advance.

With the extra 1000lb the GX has I would say either custom king’s or fox with custom valving. Dobinson supposed to have one coming one with damping adjustments. Problem with most shocks is that they are made for 5th gen 4runners are tunes for something 1000lbs less let along the extra weight you are looking to add. I would venture to say you will be closer to 5500lbs if not more by the time you done adding stuff and loaded for a trip will top 6000lb, which means you should be looking at 2.5 body shocks at least for the rear.

Also might want to look into total chaos long travel arms which require different springs and custom valving, only people do that well I know of is still just king’s. It won’t be cheap that’s for sure but if you going to do it then bite the bullet and do it! It will be a lot more money and time if you go the cheap route. I am on my their set of spring and shocks and ended with king’s on my 80, it would been much cheaper had I just went straight to king’s. LOL

I'd really like to see a proper lift kit with portal axles on a GX. The lift is great, but if you've ever been under our trucks, you know there is a ton of stuff still hanging low that makes for questionable clearance.

I echo Qball on this one. Make sure that your suspension is made for the Prado/GX or it will sag and bottom out.

I always personally recommend Kyle Fogle at Treaty Oak Offroad (a supporting vendor here) - he is the largest U.S. Dobinsons dealer and has driven a GX for about 4 years now as his personal rig, so he knows his stuff about our platforms. He has several different price points of suspensions, and can customize your travel and springs to fit your needs based on your build.

I spoke with Doc at Duggy's, looks like I am still leaning towards a King setup but Kyle is working me up a quote on some of the new adjustable Dobinson's so I will have to wait and see what he comes up with.

In regards to bumpers I think I am leaning towards a Ironman Premium for the front, what do you all suggest for the rear?

You can't go wrong with either the Kings or Dobinsons. I am sure you will be happy with either.

For a rear bumper, after trying out a few options, my personal recommendation is the Kaymar. Best quality and design, hands down. Cruiser Brothers imports them now for U.S. customers.

Has anyone modified any of these rear bumpers to carry 4gal Rotopax instead of Jerrycans?

So does this mean the 4Runner is gone?

She'll be officially gone tomorrow morning.

What changed? I recall you saying you couldn't live with the GX rear swing door. I'm sure the high resale on the 4r, you are not doing too bad on the sale.

Looking forward to see what you end up with on a lift.
