Just for the record.. Not long after getting my 98 LC I noticed that the lower gate was not level when down.. I checked and the cable on the right was rusted through but still in the plastic tube that surrounds it.. Water was captured in the tube and caused the cable to rust in two. The LC was garaged kept, so I don't know how the water got into the cable sheath, but it looked as if it had been there a long time..

Both ends of the cable are up with the bend being lower so water will pool and not drain if it gets into there !

You might want to check for water because if you sit on the lower gate with one cable broken you could bend the gate !

It happened to me as well. When it let go the other side was enough to keep the gate from collapsing onto the rear bumper. Replaced it and all is well, I guess if the other side let's go, the newer one will hold.

Yep, replaced mine too. Injected a bunch of grease inside the plastic tubes which will hopefully alleviate the corrosion issue.
