So I have been doing a few road trips back to back and not spent much time cleaning. Today was the day, I got to clean up the rig, and in the process I noticed that the hatch and tailgate are rubbing (attached photos).

I stoped in the local Toyota dealership and they said that while it certainly isn’t supposed to do that, they didn’t think a warranty claim was a good move since all the body shop (they outsource body work) would likely do is paint the rub spots and call it a day and all my panel gaps look really good. This is on a 2016.

So what should I do here:
  • Clean it, hit it with some rattle can clear and then clear bra over it.
  • Just go for the clear bra.
  • Do the warranty claim and ask nicely to adjust the hinges.
  • Something else.

Totally a warranty claim, not your issue who has to do the work. If they just respray it it will occur again, then escalate...

Is the tailgate hitting the bumper? They’ll blame you for that and tell you that the tailgate can only support 100kg of weight.

Damn that's weird. No impact to the hatch when open that could've tweaked it? Back it out of the garage with the hatch open and hit the spoiler on the door frame maybe (don't ask me how I came up with that scenario...). It would have to be a hell of an impact to tweak the alignment unless it's been off since manufacturing.
