I'm having a hard time finding something for sure on gear ratio's in axles for my darn tacoma. Want to know what the gear ratio of the axles in my 98 3.4 V6 5 speed manual trd and also wondering what 1st gear is in the tranny? Also is my low range t case ratio 2.28 to 1? Also curious if anybody knows the axle ratio for the tacoma's equipped with automatic tranny's?

Thanks for the help.

Here's some data:

The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
First digit:

  • A = 7.5" ring gear
  • B = 8" ring gear
Next two digits:

  • 01 = 3:42
  • 02 = 3:58
  • 03 = 4:10
  • 04 = 4:56
  • 05 = 3:15
  • 06 = 3:91
  • 07 = 4.30
Last digit:

  • A = 2 Pinion, Open
  • B = 4 Pinion, Open
  • C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.
Edit by Ed Quinones on 10-7-05: I used to own a 99 Prerunner ext cab 2.7L with auto tranny and gear code of B07A. It came from the factory with a 4.56 gear ratio.

Thanks. That helps alot.

So looking at marlin crawlers website to get transmission first gear ratio looks like it is 3.83 and the tcase looks like its supposed to be 2.57? Holy crap. That leaves me with a crawl ratio of about 40 to 1. that's fairly lame. It could be worse I guess. factory fj60 crawl ratio is about 30 to 1. Good thing I have my fj55 with a crawl of 107 to 1 to make me feel better. So I'm gonna look into finding axles off of an automatic tacoma for the lower gears. poor mans gear change.

wow. so my 95.5 Tacoma is a "B02A" model.

my rear diff is unlimited slip and very annoying. it goes from the wheel that grips to the wheel that slips.

how would I find what my crawl ratio is from these numbers?

I guess the MT W59 is the same as the one put in Hiluxes, but my '84 Hilux had the 4.10 gear rear...with a much better feeling 4L.

This has been shown to be incorrect many times with Tacomas and 4runners of the same vintage.

The only way to know for sure is to do the math yourself with ring and pinion teeth or driveline and tire rotations.

Yeah, it's just the old info off ttora faq. There should be an old post on here regarding the complete info. But this one's pretty easy :)

The 3.4 5spd TRD will be 3.91, if it was a 4cyl, then it gets tricky. The 3.4 auto is 4.10 gears if they came with 31s, 3.58 if they came with 225s, and several in-between.

The transfer low range is 2.28, and your first gear should be 3.83 and I plugged your info into here, so you can play with re-gear numbers or different tire sizes. Use default transfer, and R150F tranny.

(sorry for the sabbatical)
