i'm planning to buy a tacoma double cab 4x4 from year 2001 to 2004 but need some suggestions especially for people who own one. immediate plan is to use as a daily driver for now
& do some modification later.

What sort of suggestions are you looking for? The double-cabs of that model year are all pretty similar: V6, auto, optional rear locker. Finding one with the TRD Off Road package and the rear locker should be a priority - if not for you, then for resale.

Timing belt is a 95k mile maintenance item, so check and make sure that work has been done (or make it a point of negotiation).

jacket, thanks for the suggestions. I guess the info that I need aside from you what you've mentioned is what to watch & avoid in shopping for these 2001-2004.

Not really too much to watch for. I have a 2004 Double TRD Pre-Runner. Gets about 18 MPG or so. How much of a commute will you be doing? I am overall very happy with mine. Bought it used last year. Its my primary vehicle when the family is in tow. I have another Tacoma I use when it just me traveling. I have only put 6K miles on it so far (My commute to work is <1 mile).

I have had my '01 Double Cab 4x4 TRD since new and have 150K on it.
Be sure the timing belt & water pump have been changed on anything with over 90K miles - if not, then that is a point to bargain with. (get a manual, basic tools, look around here and do it yourself, about a :banana: job)

My mileage is about 16/19-20 city/highway FWIW.

I have been happy with it, I use the 4 wheel drive regularly, and even the rear e-locker (in the snow drifts today!) on occasion.

Easy to do mild lifts under 3", dependable engine, reasonably comfortable (driven to Canada, Dallas, Telluride, etc from Missouri) and resale is pretty good too (maybe not good if you're buying :D)

Just my .02!

do I have to worry about what i've heard about rust & problem on the frames?

I've always been amazed by what people ask for these trucks used. This particular year range of Tacoma here in the Seattle area sells used for between $10-15k, and they're almost 10 years old. I just bought a 2002 with 50,000 miles for around $15k. Looking forward to many years of trouble free service from it. I'll probably get a lift put on it a couple of years (OME) and maybe a cold air intake, catback exhaust, and bed canopy for it here soon.

Good luck with the hunt for your Taco, Cayeb. FWIW, I searched for about three months before I found the one I bought. Cheers.
