I bought my truck in West Palm Beach, FL. and drove it back to the university over Halloween weekend of 2010.
It had 265/75R16s on it.
It had 147k when I bought it, and i have driven it to a little over 164k.

That majority of those miles have been to do various things (wilderness first responder cert, camp, hike, bike) and visit family. A few thousand of them are backroads, and a few hundred are overland journeys.

Heres what it looked like when I bought her.

It was well outfitted for overland travel already. Winch, bull bar, cb, rear bumper, etc.

So, i drove her for a while. I fixed a bad bearing in the front diff, a rear main, and changed the plug wires. I also change the oil every 2k with the last 15 miles (from parts store home) using a 'cleaning' additive because she is a bit sludgey.

Getting my WFR Cert, sleeping at a house rented by a guy i met about 7 months earlier and talked to about an 80 series for 5 minutes with.

At this point I had a topper, built a shelf that folded up. First attempt wasn't good so no photos i-)

Then i got home to this;

32" tire

Then i drove home from the University of Arkansas, to my Farm in Missouri like this

Normally an hour, it took me 5 hours. And almost a full tank of gas (filled up at the half way mark, was at halfway when i pulled in the driveway.)

After the snow passed, my exploring continued.
Welded up a metal tech cage for my uncles 40 series, and then drove home on FS Roads.

Put lots of miles on her. The tires were getting past my point of comfort, so i re-shoe'd her with some Maxxis Bighorn 255/85R16's

The bumper came off a Prado 120 (atleast thats what the Previous Owner had told me) so it was about 3" too wide on each side. I fixed that.

I hit up the Razorback Ramble and had some fun.

Then the spotter (a very pretty one, and not the guys in the background) didnt tell me my wheel had slipped off into a crack,

Some upgrades that have happened;

Had to overhaul the rear axle this summer. 170k and still within Toyota specs to come off the line :D BUT was miss-diagnosed as the 'howling' noise. Ended up being rear-wheel bearings. It was an odd an expensive mistake, but now the diff should be good for another 170k.

Went ahead and replaced the rear leaf springs with F150- 4 leaf off of a 96 4x4 extended cab model.
Gave a huge increase in lift. Photo with the overload removed

It rode a bit rough with all the overland gear + 150lbs in it SO i reinstalled the overloads and here is how she set (Overland gear+150 lbs+two bikes+all worldly possessions minus garage tools.) Also installed some sweet steelies.

That's an odd, yet interesting journey of a Tacoma. Good to see a real world beater getting used as it should. What happened to the upgrade alt to make it crap out?

She's the DD.

I keep up with the best of them in her though. Lots of scratches and the like, only two dents (both before I built the sliders)

Next up, aux tank.

This is the beater.

The Alternater crapped out because of several water crossings and mudholes over the previous three weeks. I guide Overland/Expedition type trips for Central Overland Travels and we get really busy in the spring. People like to drive through mud and water, and Arkansas has got a lot of that.

I prefer shallow goody mud and things that don't ruin seals.

Was the 4 leaf swap from the 96 F150 direct into the Taco? Please elaborate if you don't mind. And to confirm, they are out of an extra cab 4x4?

Thanks,
Danny

Not a direct swap. You have to move the front mount foward about 5/8-3/4". You can redrill the existing mount on one side, but have to cut and reweld the inside to fit. It also has to be widened by 1/8-3/16".

I ordered a energy bushing kit to ensure the sleeves would work. I'll dig up a part number. You have to trim them as well, but a hot knife and chop saw make it breezy. Get the bolts from the donor truck. I think mine was a 96 4x4 with the 4leaf+overload pack. I also did a ubolt flip while I was at it.

Issues present:
Need bump stops.
Still have taco lean. Hoping aux tank install will fix this.
Shackle angle is steep (55* iirc)

Things I like:
Flex awesome
Good load handling
Ride is night and day.

If I need more lift, I'm going to relocate the rear shackle mounts back an inch or two to increase the shackle angle.

Nice ride!
You've done a lot of the same things I would eventually like to add to my dbl-nut ('00) Tundra.
I LOVE the black steelies...Thought about doing it with mine, but being a red truck, not so sure the black will look good. Thought about doing them in gray, like FJ40/early Hilux style...but again, not sure the gray would go good with the red.

So how do you like the Maxxis Bighorns? I just bought a set of them, also in 255/85 for the Tundie. How do they handle in that deep snow? and on the road in the snow?

The photo with the deepest snow was a firestone MT.

The bighorns are my favorite tire to date, though I'm going to put Toyos on for the next round. If I don't like them, I'm going back to bighorns.

As for their performance:
They chunk and cut easy.
They grip like mad.
They wear relatively fast, but better than swampers and the firestones. As for snow, they do relatively well. Better than good years on my beater truck.
Can't comment on ice for this truck.
23k on them. I'll see how many 32nds they are.

Bad ass taco, I really like the rear spring swap. I'm in the middle of putting a 5 leaf 63" in the back of my 62.

Do you have a build thread on the mini?

I like your sig quote btw.

Hi All:

Great build thread, thanks for sharing with us!

Does your Tacoma run the 2.7L or the 3.4L?

Five-speed manual, or auto tranny?

Regards,

Alan
