Got a 2000 Taco with automatic tranny. Check engine light came on the other day. Took it by Advanced Auto and it is reporting P0770 Shift Solenoid E.

There is no sign of any symptoms. Shifting same as it ever was. Light went off today, by the way.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Any advice or troubleshooting tips greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Explanation is that the Shift solenoid is stuck open or closed, valve body is blocked up or stuck or there is a problem with the Torque Converter lock-up. Your trans may be going bad and this is just the 1st symptom.

The PO770 code indicates that there is a malfunction with the torque converter lock up system, this is normally caused by transmission failure which is starting to deposit metal particles throughout the transmission, these metal particles will clog up the solenoids eventually.

...Or your shift solenoid may just be bad, which is a pretty easy fix.

You can drop the tranny pan, pull the solenoid to test it.
(power on = valve closed, power off = valve open)
Check for the amount of fine metal filings stuck to the magnets, and fluid clarity/cleanliness and smell.

Squid...thanks for the info. I appreciate it. We'll see what we can find.

The truck belongs to a friend of mine who began pricing tranny's today. I wanted to see what I could find out before he buys a new tranny and maybe not need it yet. The truck has about 250K miles on the clock.
