tacho works intermittently - 2003 1HZ

could anyone tell me where the tacho gets its signal from? Perhaps it is a loose wire, faulty sender or bad tacho?

I have had this issue from time to time as well. Some have found that tightening the 2 bolts that hold the wire connections in place on the gauge cluster has helped.
