bumper

This is a shot of the passenger side bumper from underneath. The spindle was welded inside the bumper shell and then boxed in. The boxing plate was later welded to the 3/4 x 3 1/2 inch bar stock that is the bumper mount and recovery point. The bumper mount is bolted to the outside of the frame. I made 1/8 inch spacers for the rear mounting points to compensate for the thickness of the rear body mount bracket.

You didn't box it in? I thought to get a good amount of impact protection in case you get rear ended, you should box the bumper in.

lemme know how well that style of mounting the lever works out for you..

I saw another bumper that Toyrod built. It is top-flight. I coveted that thing when I saw it! Naturally, I was delighted when he said he'd build one for me. Toyrod has sweated every detail, and thought through every angle. Bumper, spindle, latch, swingarm, tire position, license plate mount, it's all good and just how I wanted it. I am enjoying all of you guys' comments, but the bumper will soon be on my truck. As far as I'm concerned, the bumper is perfect. :)

It will take me a while to get it painted, because I am taking a class two nights a week for the next 5 weeks. I'll post up pics as soon as I have it ready. :D

looks to be the same one i use jason, they work out pretty well.
you are talking about the red handled latch, right? :D

Yeah, the red handled latch.

I was more commenting on the orientation of the latch, not the latch itself tho.

he has two methods of securing the swing out carrier, the latch and the pin next to the hinge. Which is an awesome way to do it. I just really like the concept of putting the latch at an angle, so you are pressing the carrier into both the bumper and the vertical "stop" at the same time. I just have not found a really goos way to do that without doing a single carrier that goes all the way across the rear bumper.

On my bumper build, I really want to have the gas tanks and the spare tire carrier on seperate hinges..

the latch is supposed to be 1/4" out furter than the hook. this is supposed to keep it snug.
i've had to change everything since going with a different spindle.

It is boxed in at the spindle. As far as impact protection, This bumper is built out of 3/16 minimum material. The stock bumper is close to 1/8"

That is an awesome bumper. I love to see others quality work, so I can "borrow" from it for my own bumper builds. That is a sweet one, thanks for posting it up.

Okay guys, I been working on it, really I have. It has been busy here, and we have had some winter weather, but things are progressing. I cleaned it up, primered it, and painted it. A few days for the paint to cure and I'll get it bolted onto the truck. :)

I know I know, this thread needs more pics. They're coming, I promise. I need to get my hands on my camera.

Side note, the class I was taking was Intro to Welding. Next project might just be some do-it-myself sliders. I'm balancing the economics of buying a welder and making my own vs buying SROR bolt-on sliders. Trying to decide.

I'm immersing myself in this to keep from crying over not being able to make it to Cruise Moab 2009. :crybaby:

I like the bumper, and think it will look great when you get it all done, I can't wait to see it. (I have that same H.L. Mencken quote hanging in my office)

I went wheeling this weekend and rode shotgun in an 80 ( thanks Kenny! ) that had a single swing out and loved the fact that the large spare tire was centered in the back of the truck.

Any concerns about carrying jerry cans on the back and the possibility of some SUV rear-ending the cans?

Made some progress on Saturday . . .

I had a little fight with this thing on Saturday.

I removed the rivets from the body support bracket. When I put the bumper on, the fit was tight, and installing the bumper moved the body brackets forward a bit. Made it impossible to get the bolts in. Then, the shims wouldn't go in, either.

A local Cruiserhead came to the rescue. He welded the body brackets and shims to the frame for me. I then drilled out the holes in the frame a little bigger. Then I was able to pound the bumper on and line it up.

I have to tighten everything up some more, then drop the swingarm on.

:bounce:

Random thoughts:

I already have a receiver hitch on the truck, so I asked Toyrod to fab this bumper w/o one. I pulled my hitch off to get more working room; that's why it doesn't show in the pics here. I am considering leaving it off. Not sure I'll even use it all that much, anyway. The 3FE ain't real happy pulling my trailer! I can see why people like the receivers frenched into the bumper; it really gets 'em up out of the way.

I don't have fuel can racks. If I ever decided I needed 'em, I'd be back at square one, I guess.

Almost done. I have to wire the new license plate light.

That is nice. Where are you at in Montana, next time I'm up that way, I'd like to check that out in person. I'm up there a couple of times a year, you can PM me your location, if need be

anymore pics of the build??

84:

Toyrod did the build, and he put up this thread with the early pics. I do not have build pics. All I did was tote it home, paint it, and bolt it on.

Sorry.
