I don't think you and Glenn are talking about the same thing.That option only works if you do it frequently (after all trips that include major river crossings or a couple times a year) because otherwise they seize up in the sleeve and then they just rust together. The benefit of the sleeve is that you are not welding directly on the spindle shaft and weakening it.

Mine has been in for a few years -if an issue I will install a grease fitting. I put a hole in the bottom for water so I could bang it out from the bottom if need be.You should try taking it out, if you even can. That is a tight tolerance fit so water will not just "bang" out of it.
I used the same ones on Robert's bumper and when it came time to replace the spindle the center section is pretty much welded in there by rust. Have to drill it out to replace it.
I would recommend to not assume you will be able to remove it unless you are going to be doing frequent maintenance on it.

I guess I should have designed grease fitting for the sleeve as well - enuff frickin work building swing outs !
