Ok so I'm looking at a 98 that has 270k miles it drives nice but the suspension is a little soft. Are new shocks in order or just springs or both? There is some clunking over bumps I assume this is worn out shocks? Also what are some common issues to look out for on 98s the timing belt has been replaced as well as radiator and starter recently

Read the 200k make over thread. I would say just about ever suspension part could be changed. I have over 300k on mine and changed the springs and shocks. I am planning on changing the control arms, sway bar bushings and mounts for the engine and transmission.
