Does anyone know of a suspension guru / shop in San Diego that can help me troubleshoot some issues on my truck? Maybe I’m just being nitpicky, but it seems something isn’t right. For the most part it drives fine, but there are couple of minor issues that annoy me. Who knows, it could be 100% normal and I just need to take my medication :o

The PO installed the suspension, so I don’t have any first hand experience with how it was built. The truck feels and behaves differently than my old truck, and I don’t feel that it should be that much different.

The front end clunks pretty often. This could be the coil spring shifting and poping back into place. My old truck had the same springs and didn’t do this. I have been under there and made sure everything was tight and installed correctly.

I get a slight shudder when accelerating slowly going up a slight hill. I want to make sure the rear shaft pinion angles are correct, the u-joints are good and the shaft is balanced.

This truck feels really tall compared to my old truck. Doesn’t look taller from the outside, just feels taller driving it. Only notable (maybe?) difference as far as I can tell is the tires (315 new, 295 old). Same springs.

This truck seems to feel more tippy in off-camber conditions. I just don’t feel as confident on the same trails or in the same situations that in my old truck wouldn’t even bother me (maybe old age? :hhmm:). It's getting to the point that I don't enjoy driving on some trails because of this. My old truck feels much more stable and planted. I may remove the swaybar to see if that helps. I even considered removing the caster plates as well.

Some differences between the new and the old:
Tires 315 / 295
Caster plates / no caster correction
Extended bumpstops / factory bumpstops.
Year 1997 / 1994
Part-time 4wd / Full-time 4wd
MAF front and rear adjustable panhards / factory panhards.

Don't get me wrong, the new truck is much better in most areas. Since both trucks are essentially the same, I feel they should behave similarly off-road, and it just doesn't seem to be the case. I am confident I can get there, just need to soft out a couple of issues. Time to call in the professionals. Thanks for any advice.

It looks like you have tires that are about 3" taller, on top of that you have caster plates, which will allow the coils to sit correctly in thier buckets, instead of being slightly bowed which would happen with lift springs and no castor correction. Seems like you probably have a truck that's probably 4" taller than your old one. 4" is a pretty big difference. Could that be a factor? :meh:

Well, it feels 4" taller, but from the measurements it's about the same height without factoring in the tires. My hub to flare measurements are consistent with other people's OME 850/863 measurements as well.

Not sure what you mean about tires 3" taller. I have 315s which are ~34.6" vs 295s which are ~33.4". This is diameter, so maybe half inch net gain in height? How do caster plates contribute to lift?

Also, you sure you aren't hitting your bumpstops on compression, causing the body to lean more? This could probably cause the "tippy" feeling?

This could be. Kinda what I was thinking as well. I would like to find a place that can put the truck through the full range of suspension motion to find what exactly is happening.

My bad. I'm still bad at the metric-standard conversion. I thought 295's were about a 31" tire.

As you lift the front end with the stock radius arm setup, the axle will rotate forwards, and move back incrementally in proportion to how much lift. This is why the aftermarket radius arms not only correct caster, but are also longer than stock arms. Some caster plates will not only rotate the axle back to its correct orientation, but also move the axle forward as well back into its stock location.
If you do not correct for the lift, the spring will be slightly bowed from the bottom coil bucket being rotated and moved backwards. This will result in a stiffer coil and slightly less lift. I netted a little over 1/2" more lift when I added my MAF drop brackets since it rotated the axle, and moved it forward, allowing the coils to sit straight up and down. It also resulted in a softer ride since the coils were under less tension in the static position.

That would certainly help. If you know anyone with a forklift you could use that to cycle your suspension and troubleshoot.

YotaMasters, though it's a long haul from San Diego. Maybe even a give John a call at SDTrux, if he can't do it he'll recommend a shop in the area.

These two shops have good recommendations on Pirate4x4, though I have no personal experience with them...

and x2 on checking to see it the cups covering the front bump stops on contacting the springs. Mine did, it would make noise when braking / starting off.

Also, what shocks are you using? I've experienced some severe body roll with cheap shocks. Are you using any coil spacers. I would think that with caster plates and OME 850s you might be a little high in the castor area, then again your front end is much lighter. I'm no expert but I've played with my suspension quite a bit trying to get things sorted out too.

Cheers,

Harley
