Hi everone

I am new to this great site and hoping someone can help
with our Landcrusier

We have a 2005 100 series Sahara / LX470 that has the AHC hydraulic suspension. When I put it in HI mode for more serious off road driving the damper setting automatically defaults to the hardest "sport" suspension setting even though I have the damper switch positioned in the "comfort" softer setting. I beleive this is the way is comes from Toyota / Lexus as we have had it since new but find it realy way too hard

Is there a way to overide the damper setting so it does not keep defaulting to the sport hard mode when in HI

The AHC work realy well otherwise and gives a great ride on the road (no bounce). I have also fitted the Slee switch that keeps it in HI mode when off roading and going above 18 mph

An auto electrician may have a fix for this issue

Dont hesitate to ask for any more information

Cheers Brett :steer:

The damper switch effects the passage of hydraulic fluid b/w each shock and it's accumulator (globe/sphere). When neutral pressure is set correctly and your globes are not flat your accumulators have 'give'. When pressure in the system goes up significantly there is less give. When a globe is flat there is no give (except if your other side has give and the gate valve is open i believe your other side helps you out).
Now back to your situation - neutral pressure is set at N height. When you go into H mode your pressure skyrockets and it feels stiff no matter what - the dampers can not increase the amount of damping your shocks have - setting it at comfort is just relative. In your case it would be like capping the end of a garden hose and turning the spigot open more - once the hose is full it's full and there's nowhere else for the fluid to go. Or put another way driving in H height probably feels a lot like it does when your globes are flat.

There's a reason toyota/lexus didn't give you the ability to stay in H or L all the time. Alignment issue (which is addressed in the slee override instructions) and the pressure issue (which i don't remember being addressed in their product documentation) but both are facts o the system - you can only optimize alignment and neutral pressure for a single setting - N, L or H and for most people N is the most logical.

In theory you could adjust neutral pressure at H height - i dont know if that causes other issues. if i were you i would either strip out ahc if it's that important to be in H all the time, or just suck it up and stay in H only when absolutely necessary and go in N the rest of the time.

Thanks for the feed back, that makes perfect sense about the neutrol position and why it is no much stiffer in HI mode.
I only need to be in HI mode for off road use so will just have to suck it up as I like all the other features AHC gives you as long as it stays reliable which it has been for the last 7 years with no maintenance at all
Have a great week
Cheers Brett

I hope you've at least changed the fluid;)
