I have a Superwinch EP9.0, and was wondering if anyone has messed with the motors on the EP series. Specifically, I'm wondering if the 5.6hp motor from the EP12.5/16.5 can be used in place of the 4.6hp motor of the 9.0. They look like the only real differences are the 2 different motors, and the 2 different planetary/clutch assemblies. I figure the 5.6hp with the taller gearing of the 9.0 would give me the same unloaded speed, and give me a little more line speed under load. It slows down pretty bad now, no doubt partially due to my stock 80A alternator and single yellow top.

Anyone know if that would work, or if there's a better option that would work, like the Warn 6hp from a 9.5xp, or the 7.8hp Superduty from Oz? I can get the Superwinch 90-30520 for $240 from Summit, or the Warn 68608 for under $300 from Amazon. The Aussie motor would be another matter. I've seen motors on ebay that say they work for both Warn and Superwinch, and they both seem to use a standard Bosch motor, but I don't know if there's shaft size/spline differences. The 2-bolt mounting at least looks to be common.

I should probably leave well enough alone, but I figure the EP9.0 is such a bargain compared to the 9.5xp, I can upgrade the motor for under $200 if I sell the original one, and have an even better performing winch for relatively cheap ($600 for the SW vs. $1000 'friend of a Warn employee' for the 9.5xp).

Well hell, now I can't figure out how to get the motor off. The 2 external bolts hold the can to the side plate, but the armature stays with the shaft, and I couldn't pry it out easily. I don't have working room with it in the bumper, so I'd have to pull it to figure it out.

I'm 99% sure the motor from the EP12.5/16.5 would work. From the schematic, it looks like there's an adapter from the motor splines to the shaft on the EP series, so at worst I suppose I'd have to replace that with the one for the 12.5 motor. Those 2 external bolts look to be standardized on all 4.5" format motors, so the shaft splines should be the only variable.

hell sell the SW and be done with it. A grand for a 9.5xp and you are screwing with a SW. Hope you can figure it all out. It wouldn't have taken me 2 seconds to make up my mind. I have Warns on every vehicle and ATV that I own less the wife's BMW. I am one long time extreemly satisfied customer. My trail observations of other winches have kept me being a believer in Warn. Just my .02

A grand hell... the 9.5xp is $1240 on Amazon right now, and was over $1300 when I ordered my winch. The cheapest I've seen the Warn go in the last 6 months is around $1100 plus shipping... I paid $600 to my door for the EP, vs. $1k to pick up the XP from a Warn employee at his discount.

Oh, my SW also has an external brake that won't fry synthetic line if you power-out, and comes with a nice weatherproof contactor, not 4 jig-a-rigged glorified starter solenoids. I have yet to read a complaint anywhere online about the EP series. Not bashing on Warn, but they charge an awful lot to put a red 'W' on your winch.

I totally get where you are coming from as far as the price, But please understand that the Warn has the longest running and safest product line that is continually improving. There long years of product design and development is now what you are seeing copied by these other winch companys. I remember when Ramsey only had 1 foward and 1 reverse solinoids, where Warn has always had 2 foward and 2 reverse just incase so you always has had backup. Money was a problem for me on my second xd9000I that i bought for my 40 so I bought a used one. I tore it down regreased and checked everything. I replaced the seals and put it back together. I then painted it black, put alll stainless hardware on it, and put synthetic line on it for all under $550. I know my winches intmatly and have spare parts and seals/ gaskets for them if I ever need them. I know that I am die hard Warn but I have to stand by a product that has never let me down. I bought my 1st X9000I in 1991 and it is still in use on my Z71 and runs as good now as it did the day i bought it. I do need to re-paint it, the gray paint has scratched and faded over the past 18 years. Good luck on whatever you do and get extra gaskets and seals when ordering parts. They come in handy when doing routine maintence.
