With the amount of coast line the Powell River area has, not much of it is accessible by 4x4. I set out on todays afternoon adventure with my trusty sidekick Milo to find a beach or two I heard tale of....

The route

I was trying to get to this rumoured beach at Elephant Point that a buddy had sent me a pic of when he took his bike in. I looped around the logging slash road but apparently it's well hidden and I missed it. The pics pinked above are from a beach at the north side of St Vincents Bay.

The trail I took straight north from Elephant Point towards Hotham Sound was extremely grown in. The maps showed a trail down to the water so I went for it. It was thick, I was bulldozing over 4" or so alders and just hoping the road was there as I couldn't see a damn thing most of the time, all while along a cliff edge road..fun stuff :)
It eventually ended at a bit of a clearing where I could turn around luckily, but I could see no trace of any beach access trail.

Still nice to get out, I see Milo got a swim in, more adventure awaits.

Photos look amazing! I wish we have secluded oceanfront spots like that so close to home.

Wow, that IS nice! 😎

Hard on the truck though…

Very excited about heading this way soon (probably Monday Aug 4th). My wife and I will be leaving from the Lower Mainland. Having never been farther than Sechelt, we’d like to go as far north as possible and find a secluded camp spot with an ocean view. Would that be somewhere around Lund? Any advice would be much appreciated!

After a night or two on the coast we then plan on taking the ferry over to Comox and exploring Vancouver Island for 4-5 days. It’d be nice to just “wing it” with the ferries but Is that a terrible idea?

I don’t know about crossing from Sunshine Coast but when you finally decide to leave either Horseshoe Bay or Duke Pt or definitely Victoria make sure you have a reservation. The major routes are crazy busy and it’s almost impossible to figure out if it’s a quiet time. Not until way past end of summer.
Bring your backroad map book. Bladedog and the group did a cool trip last year and that route would really be an eye opener for north island sight seeing.

Special thanks to Enigma for posting this thread. Wife and I decided not to reinvent the wheel and we’ll just use the map above to camp near Powell River. Hopefully even the same spot we see in the photos above.

Sunshine Coast reservations are sold out for Monday so we’ll just have to wing that stretch.

I have the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast Backroads map book but just bought an OnX membership to avoid the need for the Vancouver Island book. I’m pretty excited about OnX and being able to download maps onto my iPad and use gps offline.

I also plan to hunt for the Bladedog et al thread for Van Isl ideas. Thanks for that tip.

Past Lund, at Sara Point, is a very nice place to camp and enjoy the parade of yachts going to and fro Desolation Sound. It's the start, or end, of the Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) . There is a cabin there, and a couple tent platforms.

We did the north end of Vancouver Island last July, it was incredible to say the least. I think there's a thread on it in here somewhere.

edit: found it, here.
