I have a 1984 FJ60 with 1HDT transplant (transplant was done before I bought the rig; don't know any history). Every once in a while, maybe once a week, maybe once in a couple of weeks, it will randomly die on me when I am driving along at low speed, like city traffic. After it dies, I can crank and crank and crank, and it won't start, but if I let it sit for five to ten minutes, it fires right up, and I drive off. It's never done this more than once in any given day, and it never does it at highway speed. So far, it has done it in the middle of a busy intersection, just as I was pulling away from the light, it has done it as I was pulling out of a parking lot, and it did it once as I was slowing down to a stop sign. Oh, and it did it once as I was just motoring along, at about 25 mph, in traffic. Again, if I let it rest for about five minutes, it fires right up. It's kind of like playing Russian Roulette in city traffic. Any ideas?

sounds like it's sucking air in the fuel line. you can put clear hose in tempararly and look for air in the system or next time it stalls pump the primer and see if it starts right away.

Thanks for the idea. I wonder why it would only do it once in any given day and only at low speeds.

the higher RPM of the engine the faster the feed pump spins and moves more fuel or air and fuel mixture.

This happens to me when I had fuel adjusted by a local shop and getting my pump rebuilt when I was a newb.

It ended up being the fuel screw being turned down to low and timing was also off.

Ah, yes, I see.

Interesting
engine would actually stall when turning at a red light RPM would drop and sometimes come close or stall.

that was a while back all fixed now with the fuel screw adjusted and pump timing set correctly
