Hey all--

I apologize if this has been asked elsewhere in the forum...did several searches and didn't find anything.

I have a 2001 LC with the original Nav software. I purchased the 4.2 data version DVD after a fair amount of research and just received it in the mail today.

The DVD was sealed and appears to be the real deal. The numbering on the disk is 5-464210-018, data ver. 04.2.

It was my understanding from my research that I should be able to pop this in and have it update my software so that it could read the new data on this disc, but that nothing else would look different (i.e. the interface would still look like the '01 generation interface).

When I pop it in, I get an error that says "Disk read error. Check disk." Popping the oringinal DVD in brings it back to normal. So obviously it may not be liking the new disk itself.

So I'm curious, has anyone successfully upgraded the data disk to 4.2 on a 2001, and if so, could you give me some specifics to help me figure out if it's the disk I bought or something else?

thanks...

this an OEM disk or an "ebay" "version"?

I bought it on Ebay. Just did some additional looks on Ebay and found a listing for what appears to be the identical disk which says it's compatible with the 2004 and 2005 LCs, but makes no mention of previous years. I suspect I have a version which is not compatible on previous gens of the Nav DVD (like the 2001 gen). I did read one listing a number of months ago that made some mention of an "upgrade 4.2" version of the disk which they warned was "different than the version that comes with the new models," but have not since seen such a listing. All 3 of my local dealers don't know anything about the upgrades, so they've been little help. Having trouble wanting to spend $250 on the 5.1 upgrade from the dealer. I guess I may have just spent $50 on something I need to now try to relist on Ebay!

yes, but is it OEM or not? If not, all bets are off...

I presume it's OEM in that it's copywrited Toyota Motor Corporation and Denso and NavTeq. Is there a way I can tell for sure?

Try it in another later model toyota nav unit, I bet it would work in an 03-04 LC, which is a Gen 3 nav unit or something, not sure there. I'd try it in mine for you if you were nearby. I'm running 4.2 in mine but it is the 05 camry unit with the dvd built into the head unit (no separate dvd player)

Yeah, I'm almost positive now that you are correct. I found a listing on a Lexus forum stating that the Gen 2 Nav systems (which I think mine is) needs a different version that's not often on Ebay...an upgrade version that very clearly says on the disc a warning to the effect of "This will upgrade your software and you cannot go back to the old version" which mine does not.

Seems like there were a lot of people who spent $50 to figure this out on the other forum, and it was not well-documented anywhere.

Thanks for your help...if I ever get a version to work I will post the specs here so others can save the hassle of buying the wrong ones.

Thanks for posting up your experience. I too have an 01 and would like an upgrade. I would really appreciate if you would post up the numbers when you get it figured out.
