Last weekend I began removing the oil pan to flush it out, clean it up, etc. Needless to say, with the vehicle being 37 years old there were issues. Mainly those issues surrounding an oil pan that had not been removed in a long, long time (if ever). If someone needs help with this same situation, please visit

FJ Series : Rebuild Project

for some good advice. Pics of the gasket replacement, restoring the oil pan and valve covers, etc. are available there.

Comments are always welcome, so let me know what you think, and how I did. Admittedly, I'm a newbie at auto work, but I think I'm coming along!

nice write up and pics

Cos, nice website! I think most use a bottle jack against the frame and the 2x4 on the side of the oil pan to break the seal. Seems like you slightly lifted the rig with the bottle jack underneath?
Oh, well.....whatever works. Glad you got off!

Degnol, thanks! It was on ramps for better crawling under, but yeah, we put pressure on the oil pan using a floor jack and 2x4. When that didn't work, we went to cutting at the gasket.
