I started to have problems with the starter and have jumped through a few hoops to get it better so I thought I'd share with 'Mud as I couldn't find anything on the search function.
Problem: Starter motor carries on turning after the car has started, in fact, it even carries on turning while the ignition is off and the key is out. Also, one incidence of the starter not engaging with the ring gear, i.e. noise of motor turning but the engine doesn't turn over. After this I pulled the starter motor.
Starter removal is relatively straightforward, and covered elsewhere on 'Mud.

On opening it up, the usual culprits, the copper contacts in the solenoid, were worn and I order a new plunger and copper contacts for £15, I used repairkituk.com and spoke to Carl, a top bloke who spent plenty of time talking through the problem with me.
On refitting the starter to the car the starter would consistently fail to engage on the first try but always engage on the second try, no starter "over-run" though so the contacts must have been fusing together.
The starter was removed again, and this time I used:

as a reference for stripping the clutch / shaft / Bendix. Since the clutch itself appeared to be working fine I didn't strip it down past getting the shaft out of the clutch. The grease in there was pretty gunky so I stripped it off with brake cleaner and lightly oiled it with light oil.
The whole mechanism is now a lot more sprightly, throwing the gear out of the end a lot faster and it now only fails to engage the ring gear about one start in 5 and then always on the second attempt. Perhaps the springs need replacing?
Useful tools:
Manual impact driver for screws holding the aluminium cases together
Needle nose pliers for taking off a nasty little circlip
Vice (as per video)
Extension bars to give a longer reach to the socket used for the top nut holding the starter onto the car.
All of this is on my HJ61 and even though the electrics are 24V, I suspect the basics are the same on other 60's..
