strange wiring in footwell fuse panel - what is this? (1 Viewer)

Hey all

my new to me 100 series has an aftermarket deck, amp, and exterior cameras.

while replacing the steering tilt motor yesterday I noticed some shenanigans going on in the fuse box by the driver footwell. It looks like a wire got spliced into a fuse? I've never seen a setup like this before where there are two small fuses in the wire.

It's worth noting that this wire wasn't plugged in when I found it. Does anyone know what this might be?

Not factory, it’s called a fuse tap. Maybe the previous owner installed something aftermarket and powered it up using fuse tap. Follow the red wire and check where it ends at?

maybe an aftermarket alarm or remote start

those are 'add a fuse' taps. Not OEM as mentioned above. trace the wires to see what they power.

ah ok that makes sense.

My other concern is - what fuse did this take the place of? If it's not plugged in, isn't there a factory fuse slot that is not functioning?

I'll try and trace the wire.

That fuse block has some open/unused slots from factory.

Your fuse tap has two fuses. One is for the original "tapped" circuit. The 2nd one is for the added circuit.

Ran out and took a picture of my 06 fuse block. Looks like your missing fuse would be for AHC (but you probably don't have that).

Your fuse block could be different i suppose but the lid should lay out what should be there (if anything).

awesome thanks! Yes my 06 is no AHC no Nav so I'm probably missing a few.

Time to go and trace back that wire

If using the fuse tap on the unused AHC circuit, the AHC circuit will now be energized. Probably doesn't matter but just know it is.
