Hey all, just finished installing a fresh fuel filter on my 92 fj80. It was generally running like s***, so I started with a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires. That made some improvement, but the milage is still less than 8mpg so somethings still wrong, plus there's a stumble just off idle that goes away if I floor it. I read the posts about the o2 sensors, so I'll do those soon along with new cats. Anyway, from the look of it, the fuel filter may have well been origional at 160k, so I replaced it. Strangely, the off idle stumble has disappeared. I also greased the ujoints and slip splines while under there, but I don't see how that could be related. Wouldn't a clogged filter be more likely to affect higher rpm performance? Seems that more rpms = more fuel, or am I missing something? I've still got some driving to see if it changes my milage figures. Seth

If your engine bay filter was plugged a bit, consider accessing the fuel tank via the cargo floor hatch and changing the pre-filter on the fuel pump itself. Do a search on this here.

I noticed a very nice improvement when i changed mine as well! Probably the original with 120k!

CooL!

I have noticed a definite increase in response, and overall smoothness. I can't really see how a filter could be a lifetime part, I would suspect that the tank screen just keeps the really big grit from getting to the main filter. I cut the filter open out of curiousity and it wasn't totally clogged, but definitely filthy. FYI, pinch off the feed line to the filter before loosening the 17mm banjo bolts. I got doused in gas before I found the line. Seth

Make sure you remove your gas cap when changing the filter to relieve pressure on the fuel system. If you don't you will surely get doused with plenty of fuel ...

1 shower and alot of soap later and I still smell like gas... Ugh

Soak your head in tomato juice. Works for dogs and skunks...
