Hey all.

I'm planning to replace my bushings as they are stock on my '84 FJ60 and are in bad shape. I thought since I was at it, I should also replace the shocks at the same time to make the ride a bit better, if possible (it's not that bad now). The vehicle has 130k on the clock and I don't see anything in the records indicating that they've ever been replaced(my parents bought vehicle new and kept every last receipt for everything - even windshield wiper receipts!).

With this in mind, what would be a good stock equivalent shock to replace the one's on there now? The truck is completely stock and I'd like to keep it that way. I searched threads, but everybody is all lifted, etc! I need a near-OEM solution. I don't four wheel (:flipoff2:) but use as a daily driver in the city.

Or maybe it doesn't matter what you get? Some insight would be great.

Thanks in advance.

The OEM shocks give a good ride, are very inexpensive, and will last a long time. They shouldn't be more than $35-40 a piece at the dealer.

Well, shucks. I assumed OEM would be discontinued, thus the thread.

Obviously, the OEM answer is right choice for me.

Thank you, sir!

Anything non-OEM should be checked VERY carefully for the correct dimensions. It seems that the after market parts world just flew by the seat of their pants when compiling information on Land Cruisers. Its frequently wrong.

Yup, a 511-69066 (front right) goes for around $30.20 call up Cruiser Dan and get the discounted price.
However it seems the rears (531-60081) have been discontinued?

Good info. I'll check the rears (haha!). Assuming rear's have been discontinued, does anyone have a suggestion on an ample replacement? Lehiguy has me concerned with getting the correct business.

Thanks for the information thus far.

I put in a set of Monroe Gas Magnums (34959 front, 34802 rear) last fall that I bought from Rock Auto for under $100. They're not great, but the price was right and they're worlds better than the tired 25 year old stock shocks that they replaced.

Given the weight and leaf spring sag concerns on the 60, I am installing a set of Monroe Sensatrac Load Adjusting Shock Absorbers in the back. They were dirt cheap on closeout- basically a shock with a coil spring built in.

FJ is still up on jack stands, so I have no driven them yet.

First, take off an old shock and jack up the rig by the frame or bumber until the wheels are in the air. Measure the distance pin to pin. Determine as nearly as you can the collapsed length of the shock as well. Then buy the new shocks based on the dimensions. This may or may not coincide with the refference material for your particular rig. I really like the Skyjacker Nitros for an off-the-shelf shock. I did not like the Hydros at all, very different feel, too harsh. The Sensatracks give a very, very nice ride too.

I bought two of those for the rear but they're a total different part number
