I took the first long road trip with my new-to-me '05 and noticed that the rear end bounced up and down much more than I'm used to with a past Sequoia. Had 5 people in the car with a few hundred pounds of bags, etc in the roof box. No trailer.

Even empty with the tailgate down, I can push down and bounce the rear end quite a bit.

Replaced all 4 shocks when I first bought the truck with Monroe Spectrum. Yes, I should have replace them with OEM shocks, but was in a hurry that day.

It just seems like the Monroe shocks don't dampen the bouncing as much as they should. However, this is my first LC and first short wheelbase 4X4, so I don't know how they normally behave.

Considering replacing the rear shocks with OEM before the next roadtrip at Christmas time.

Yes, I researched all the posts that talk about rear shocks but found nothing specific about the rear bounce.

Any experienced insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

jim, when you say bounce are you referring to how far it moves, or the fact that once it gets moving up and down it wont stop? With that much weight, there is a lot for the shocks to get under control. When it is just you in the car does it act that way?

I have not experienced this even with stock suspension on my LC but maybe you could clarify some.

I experienced bounce when my OEM were at the end of their life. My guess is the new shocks and old spring combo just struggle with the weight. There are a lot of options for new shocks/springs. Figure which best suits you needs. But, it sounds like the ones you installed right now are not enough.

Yes, both. When I'm going down a road with dips in it, the rear end bounces up and down alot more than what I experienced with my Sequoia. It's more pronounced with the truck loaded with the family and gear. Even does it some when it's just me driving to work. The rear tires don't leave the ground, just bounces around like the shocks are gone.

I figured the LC would be sprung stiffer, since the Sequoia isn't considered an off road vehicle.

Replace the Monroes with OEM shocks. Sam at Lowe Toyota has great pricing on them. All four for my '99 ran around $130.

After the OEM shock install, consider adding the airlift bags for the heavy load road trips- cheap mod and works well.

For sure. Best $100 upgrade available, but only for non-AHC models of course.
