He has taken it to a local mechanic with no luck getting the issue resolved.

His truck developed a whine over 30 mph when accel or decel. No whine in the sweet spot in between. I sent him a set of new used gears (thanks Chris) which the guy just installed after having Toyota in Muskogee set up the third. Whine is still there. Only thing I can think of is gears still not set right.

Can anybody think of anything else this might be other than the gears still not being set correctly?

Thanks in advance
Chris

There is at least a 50% chance that used gears will whine, may "break in" but may not, I know of no mechanics that will guarantee noise free operation on used gears. They did not tell him up front?

As far as I know he made no mention of it.
So the gears could be set up perfect and still not sit quite right in the new third??

So what is the solution, suck it up and go for new gears
or
wait a while, drive it some and see if they settle in?

Any chance of neglected ujonts making this kind of whine?

I would run it awhile and drain it and check real close for metal, use a bright light and a magnet.....if nothing is found run it..........very little chance of u joints doing it........
is it constant, under load under coast etc?
Butch

Under acceleration and deceleration it whines.
At coast there is no whine.

I realize that I was stretching a bit with ujoints. I was hoping for anything that is going to save my non mechanical brother from having to pay his mechanic for a 3rd trip into the differential to fix this friggin problem.

So lets assume it is still gear whine, and I am 99.9% sure it is.
What do should I advise him to do...drive it for 100-200 miles or so...drain and check fluid for metal, then repeat and see if the new used gears settle in?
Or is it one of those things where if it is whining he is SOL and time to buy new new gears?
I am heading up there after HH on Saturday so I will be hands on with it on Sunday. At least I can yank the 3rd for him and take it to a gear shop in Tulsa.
