D'animal, this one's for you (and anybody else who wants to chime in):

What would cause the circlip on the sprocket which drives the chain to pop off, without a load?

Don't peek yet.....

: Backstory is that some very bad firefighters did not rehab their saws after a fire, and I inheirited a nasty mess. Had to sand the plug to get it to fire, and many pulls later it finally began to sputter to life. Just started spinning the chain, not cutting anything, and 'kersproing' the chain came off the bar. When my coworker broke it down we found the circlip to be MIA, and not found in area of saw running.

:hhmm:

Most guys use a leatherman to remove the clip. The stretch it out and it no longer has the right tension to fit properly.

There are two type of washers the clip is recessed into. The ones used on the commercial or Proffesional series saws is a machined washer. Part # 0000 958 1032. They are generally installed in 044/MS440's and bigger saws. It is a bugger to get the clips off if there is any debris wrapped around the crankshaft. That is when they stretch the clip and deform it when removing it.

The second washer is a stamped washer. Part # 0000 958 1021. They are used on the rest of the saws in the line up and can be used on the other saws as well. Although it is easier for the clip to be removed, it is also easier for the clip to be knocked off when cutting grass type brush or small twigs.

Install a new clip # 9460 624 0801 and you should be good. That is assuming you are working on a pro series saw. What model are you working on?

guilty of leatherman use myself, good to know.

Logistics brought us a Poulan Pro as replacement [gagging sound] and took the Stihl 046 for repair. Turned out to be missing bearings as well.

Thanks for the info!

Good Gosh!

Replacing an 046 with a Poulan pro is like replacing Waggners FJ45 on the 80 series chassy with a stock subaru brat.

What were they thinking.
