My 046 with very low hours on it (I only use it for large cuts and have a 036 sized saw for most cutting) sucks down fuel. I fill three times as much as I fuel the other saw for the duration of cutting I get. I know the 046 is a beast, but is this normal?

So does my ms660

I'm going to say no. We run 290, 390, 360, and 046s at work and the 046 and 360 run quite a bit longer than the 290/390 and the 046 seems to run a little longer than the 360. Or at least that's the way it seems. The 660 seems like it can be a fuel hog at times.

Thanks for the replies. I can't figure what it could be. Maybe its running too fast?

One more question, are going going through the bar oil at about the same rate? As you should be having to refill both tanks at the same time every time. Could be since its your big saw, your running it at WOT the entire time verses the little saw which is idling, half throttle mostly?

Yes, bar oil is running down same as gas. And, yes, I am normally running it full throttle on large cuts that max out its 24 inch bar. That is probably it. But, bucking one tree normally takes 1.5 tanks of gas.

In any event, love the saw.

No photos, sorry. Nothing big. Usually oaks about 2' across at the base. I also cut the large limbs at the top for firewood. Saw cuts like a bat out of hell. I can go through 2' of oak in something like 5 to 10 seconds with a heavy chain, but it likes the gas.

The Original 046 had an Awesome Carburetor that had a low range circuit, mide range jet and high speed jet. It was designed for torque/power, not fuel economy.

When EPA stepped in, they changed the emission standards so the jetting in the carburetor changed. The low range circuit was left unchanged and the mide range jet became a circuit and high speed jet became smaller. The biggest thing a commercial cutter would notice is that it runs 5 minuteds longer on a tank of fuel.

With a 28" bar and sharp chains, my 046 & MS 460 run about 22-25 minutes in a constant cutting with the full length of the bar in the cut. The most it will run while limbing and cutting the smaller stuff is 38-40 minutes.

In summary, there is no substitute for cc's or power/torque. It take fuel to get the power and torque. Based on what you have posted, I would saw there is nothing wrong with your 046.

The chainsaw god has replied. Dan, I gotta say I've never checked how long a tank of gas lasts, however by the end of the day its not used up quick enough.

Agreed only my climbing saw runs out of gas before I do.....

Thanks for all the replys. The saw cuts great. I think I can take filling it up a couple more times a day. Mine is the first year run of the 046, so I guess it has the carb Dan is talking about.
