I am pretty confident that my starter contacts are sticking becuase every now and then it simply wont start all the lights and electircal flip on n then dim when turning the key to start but no starter action at all. also ive had the thing try to start itself, put the car in rev after starting it and it just starts trying to start itself even though it was on. also, when attempting to turn it off it continues to start itself and then turn key to on n its fine but sounds a little funny, after a while n a trip around the block it turned off on the next try. im curious to know if anyone has had all of these problems and replacing the contacts doesnt solve the problem? i dont want to do the job if its goign to be a waste of time just to find out i need to replace something else. thanks for the help

Sounds like starter contacts to me. Search and you can find close to 100 threads about the same thing with these same exact issues. One of those threads also will show you just how dangerous of a problem your dealing with! FIX IT NOW! There have been a couple trucks that have caught on fire due to the starter getting stuck. This will SURELY cause you much more damage (to you pocket book and the truck) than getting the parts from C-Dan and doing it yourself.

My experience was that once my starter had stuck I was past getting by with just replacing the contacts and needed to buy a reman. starter from Dan. The contacts are the best (and cheapest) place to start.

On a related note, about this potentially dangerous problem with the starter staying on- I've never had such problem with starters on previous vehicles regardless of age. I have no problem replacing contacts/plunger every 7 years / 70k mi. as PM considering my driving habits, but...while I have heard some negative reviews of the Mean Green Starter (Junk I think it was you who esp. didn't like em?) I was wondering if the Mean Green's would be immune to this problem...? Any idea?

so who is c dan im a little new around here havent met him before

My Tacoma had all the same issues except for the self starting. I cought it just a little earlyer than you I am sure. The parts are not expensive, get a plunger while your at it.

If it does not fix your problem than you only gambled a little money and got more familure with your truck doin the job. You can then get a reman.

If it does fix it Yea, this board and Dan are the only place that has told me I could replace individual part. All the other times I needed parts for other vehicles. Places like Napa/Cragen/Carcraft would listen to me tell them what was wrong with the Alternator/starter etc and then take mine and sell me a reman.

A few dollars and 15 minutes on the bench and mine was called a reman for the next customer.

My point is here you have access to parts that I believe most parts stores or dealer parts counter guys won't tell you about.

What ever you choose Alaska Cruiser is right, post's here indicate that you are in danger of a fire.

Good Luck

He is the parts guy at American Toyota in Alb., NM. He will treat you right and give you a great price on all OEM parts. Click here for his contact information.

Another plus if you live outside of New Mexico there is no tax! And yes he is still cheaper after shipping than if you went to your local parts depo...but I suggest you call their first and get their price and then call Dan, and be amazed. Good luck!

DON"T DELAY fixing the starter. I am pretty sure just replacing the contacts will fix your problem, but if they weld together you will get into a situation where you can't shut off the starter without disconnecting the battery. If you are prepared to do this, it's no huge deal, assuming you have a wrench handy. But if a girl friend is driving and it happens, you can kiss your starter and possibly your battery goodby.

It happened to me - I was just getting ready to order contacts when mine hung up. I ended up buying an entire exchange starter for $285 from my local stealer because I needed to use the truck and couldn't wait for Cruiserdan to send me the contacts...

I hope you have a good selection of extension - getting the top bolt loose took me 90 minutes. I ended up using a short ratchet handle and a long breaker bar (the handle from my hi-lift jack).

I am sure you are aware by now, that access is through the left wheel well? It is best to remove the wheel and lay a thick pad over the rotor.

My truck sat for about 10 days, undriven. the wife casually mentioned after day 10 that she saw the interior light on and forgot to tell me! ANyhow, i tried to start it, and it made the 'tic tic tic tic' noise. I let it sit for a few minutes, then cracked it again--it turned over, but VERY slowly, then it started. I drove it for about 20 minutes, and toko it home. Started it again, and it started right up, like normal.

5 days passes, drove it twice, no problems.

Yesterday, the 'tic tic tic' and sloooow turn over again. I am HOPING it's battery related, and have read through many of the battery threads. My True Start has some years on it. Does my issue sound more like battery than starter?

I dont believe 20 min of driving would charge a deaply discharged battery

So now you think it may just be becouse the misses forgot about the light?

Well lets hope so.

The starter contacts would still be a good PM if you have higher milage.

That was a different person than the original question. ;)

And if it sat for 10 days with the light on I am surprised it started at all...and yes that sounds more like a battery issue that starter.

chiz45,

It could be either or both the battery and the starter contacts. At 115k miles you are due to rebuild the starter and if the battery is 5 years old then you need to be planning to replace it. I would do both as part of a spring PM.

While you ordering stuff from CDan, get a FSM too.

what is an FSM?

FSM=Factory Service Manual. There's a "Search" button on the upper right side of each forum page. I'm betting $5,000 that you would get no less than 200 hits and most of those would decode the acronym.

My wife reported similar symptoms. 24 hours later the starter stayed on, and after about 5 minutes, it caught fire. Damage was "only" $1500.

Learn from my (and others) experiece.

how many of you carry fire extinguishers onboard for this or other reasons?

ill be home from college for the summer in less than a week, the first thing i am doing is fixing the starter then hopefully ome 3in lift and then some brakes, uz100 pads up front.

to fix this is it necessary to replace the contacts as well as the plunger or will just replacing the contacts solve the problem. c dan how much are contacts n plungers, anything else needed to fix this mess?

Depends on the condition of the plunger. It's an extra $25 or so and you'll be glad you replaced both. That being said, I replaced only the contacts and cleaned up the plunger. That was 50k miles ago.
