I have a later model Toyota head unit from a rav4 or something similar and I'm extremely motivated to install it in my 2000 LC.

I have the factory single disc unit with the 20 pin plug on the back. Im pretty sure that means I have an amp under my passenger seat.

The new(er) head unit is the standard 10/6 pin plug and I believe that means its an internally amplified unit.

Can I install the new radio in conjunction with the existing stock amp and have them play nice?

Ive got all the pinouts and it looks like the 10/6 has everything except the Mute, Fade, and Beep pins.
Looks like the 20pin is missing the neg side of the speaker wires but Im assuming they are at the amp and I would just leave them out of the new radio...

Any help would be great!

Is there a reason they wont play nice?
Can I make them work?

Throw whet ever head unit you have in the garbage. You are replacing junk with junk.

Spend $200 on something like this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GN5K5WO/?tag=ihco-20

Never regret the purchase.

Wire it to speakers directly if you are keeping stock speakers... which are also garbage (unfortunately).

I concur. I spent $100 on a Pioneer x700bt and very happy with the features and options. If you don't need Nav or a crazy screen, you can spend little and get a huge bump over Toyota factory radios.

I'll third that. As an honest member of the male species, I'm never lost, so the NAV stuff is irrelevant to me.

For a few hundred bucks, there are a good list of stereos that will bump up your sound quality quite a bit. Give'em a look..

Thanks for the advice...

However I already have the iPod and Bluetooth adapters and really like the clean OEM look so for now am going to stick with the Toyota unit.

I'm not looking for incredible sound and fully understand that a new head unit is much better quality.

That being said anybody able to answer the questions?

So I made my own harness and got it working. Everything sounds and works good except...

I now have a slight hiss coming through the speakers at all times, head unit on or off.

Is this because I'm amplifying an amplified signal? If so I could probably solve with a line level converter?

Any thoughts?

I see two things...

1- the amp is not turning off.

2-The impedance from the head unit you have is likely a mismatch for the current amp... causing the noise floor to be high. We see this all the time with an aftermarket head unit (I know your's is Toyota) to the factory amplifier. In my first comment about an aftermarket head unit I specified wiring direct for this reason.

Thanks alot for the imput
I'm definitely an audio rookie...

Would a line level converter correct the impedance issue?

That's odd that the amp isn't turning off...the pinouts for the newer Toyota deck have the AMP pin...maybe the new deck doesn't send an on/off signal

I'm not adverse to changing out the amp if I can find a suitable one to take it's place if that will fix the issue... I just really like the look of a Toyota deck.

I took the 20pin plug of the circuit board of another Toyota radio to make an adapter harness lol
