Haven't seen a straight answer in my search. My steering wheel is no where near centered. Will an alignment fix this or does it need to be removed and put back on? Not much knowledge of the whole process.

Thanks!

Sounds like you need a front end alignment. You adjust the upper drag link to realign the steering wheel. You loosen the clamps on the drag link on each end with the wheels pointed straight and unlock the steering column and rotate the drag link until the steering wheel is aligned. The tie rods get rusted sometimes and can be hard to turn if they have not moved in a long time. Spray some PB blaster on them and let it set for awhile before trying to turn them.

You will want to check the front end alignment too.

What did you do that screwed it up?

A suspension lift will throw it out. Changes the geometry from the steering box to the tie-rod/knuckle arms.

Been like that since I've had it. PO lifted it. I've been working on the little things one at a time and now I'm here.

Depending on how far out of line it is, you can also take off the steering wheel and turn it.

But the splines on the shaft are pretty far apart, so it's not a very fine adjustment. I tried it on mine, and with one click to the right it ended up worse than before, but in the other direction.

I'd recommend the alignment first to eliminate any faults or failures and to protect the tires. Ask the alignment shop to correct the steering wheel through turning the tie rod end clamps. Be sure to demonstrate to the technician where the steering wheel is positioned when you are going straight down a flat road with no crown in the middle. That way he can get-er-done quick. Experienced technicians can guestimate pretty close how many turns will bring her back straight.

DON'T adjust your steering wheel by removing it and repositioning it. You need to adjust your drag link. Loosen the clamps and rotate the link rod until the (steering) wheel is in its centered position. If the front wheels are off the ground it is easier to do. Follow the procedure in the FSM. Don't pay some joker to do this it is very easy and quick.

What he said, moving the steering wheel too much will cause the turn indicators to not function properly

Thanks for all the input. It is a factory steering wheel. It drives pretty straight, but pulls hard to the right when braking. Thought that might be the rear brakes?

Or front, sticking caliper??? First things first, is the tire pressure correct on all tires?

Tire pressure is fine. I was thinking of doing the 4runner caliper upgrade. May be a good reason to go ahead.

Good point. I didn't think of that.

Caution

Be careful not to over do it while attempting to break the drag link loose or you'll do what I JUST did- pop the ball joint off.

Now I get to learn how to fix that...
:frown:

Just to add a counterpoint--many, including myself, adjust an off center sterring wheel by popping it off and turning it a few teeth. Very easy, never had a problem with my indicators.

Also, if it pulls hard right while braking, look for grease on left disc.
