Started hearing a squeak from the steering wheel column, at least that is where it sounds like to me.
Noticed it while towing my utility trailer.
Seems its only at certain turn positions of the steering wheel.
Is there a process to grease the bearing or whatever?

Does the noise come up when you turn the steering wheel?

Yes, I noticed it when backing up my trailer and doing big turns ... I'm not that good at backing up.
Took it out for a normal drive without the trailer and did not notice the sound.
Would like to lubricate any bearings in the steering column.

It can be your drive (v) belt or a pulley. My suggestion, park the car and pop the hood. Ask a buddy to take the wheel and turn it while you observe where that noise is coming from. Also, inspect your power steering reservoir maybe it’s time to get that serviced (dirty ps fluid) and replace with fresh one.

I had the same issue which was solved by popping off the two small cover plates on each side of the steering wheel and spraying silicone lubricant (plastic/rubber safe) all around the visible moving parts. No more squeak.

That's what this is for:

It's in the service manual.

FWIW, it's also great for regreasing electric motors, like the door and window motors (in the 80s) and the transfer case actuator motor.

I had a similar noise although more of a friction / rubbing feeling than a squeak.

Follow the steering shaft all the way to the firewall and you'll see a big rubber boot / cap. Peel this rubber cap back just enough to use your finger to rub silicone grease all along the ends of the rubber cap where it makes contact. This solved it for me although it needs to be redone every once in a while.

Follow the steering shaft all the way to the firewall from the Engine Compartment, or from inside the Cabin to the firewall?

Just ran to the garage... peel back this rubber cap and silicone grease the ends (where it's edited red). Make sure to go along the entire circle of the boot

there were a few different p/n for the kit, or at least there used to be. some of them had more tubes of grease vs the others, if you can get a kit with more grease go for that one
