The :princess: 's 2014 GX460 has developed a power steering leak in the end seals of the rack. Has anybody here rebuilt one or is just more effective to replace?

Has anyone replaced one? According to the FSM it requires the engine to be pulled. That seems a little excessive, unless its the only way.

I can’t say I’ve heard of anyone on the forums or FB rebuilding one. I’ve only heard of replacements

2016 post here on CL that one replaced one but did have to lift the motor some

“But, long story short, the rack CAN be changed without removing the engine. But you will have to undo the motor mounts, raise the motor and move the front diff back as far as possible to pull it off. There just plain isn't enough physical space to get the big end of the rack out either "hole". ”

Thank you.

I've had to replace two (2) steering racks on my old 100 series LC. In the long run, I'm sure it'd be easier and cheaper to replace it. You may be able to get by with a low mile used one from a wrecking yard.

Yes it can, but labor is expensive in US. Most likely Shop that can rebuild does not have test equipment to verify rebuilt it good before putting it back in. It's much more cost effective to replace the whole assembly.

This early failure seems to happen a lot more when driver tend to rotate steering while stationary and live in hot climate. Adding a power steering fluid cooler should help. A few people that off road their vehicle hard noticed streering assist reduction once the fluid gets over heated.

Noting Jstawgn's comment on expensive labor, all that labor that would go into rebuilding the old rack, for a wee bit more, get a new one!
$697.93 for a new steering rack from Bell Lexus: FRONT STEERING GEAR & LINK. 2016 Lexus GX 460 Premium | Bell Lexus North Scottsdale, Scottsdale AZ - https://parts.belllexusnorthscottsdale.com/a/Lexus_2016_GX-460-Premium/_65511_6722246/FRONT-STEERING-GEAR--LINK/782410-4505.html?assemblySearchGuid=D4EB2BAB-A4C8-4CEE-BAE5-081E9A833312

I put a Cardone reman rack in my GX470. It was less than $300 on RockAuto. OEM Toyota core, but cleaned up with new seals, bushings, bellows, and new tie rod ends. Looks like they are out of stock for a GX460 right now. It's been fine for the past 3 years. If you can wait I'd consider getting a reman rack when it's back in stock.
