Was piddleing with my 79FJ40 which is up on blocks, drag link disconnected, found like a detent in the kunckels? in center position while turning wheels rt and left. Is this normal or indication of bigger problems?

You mentioned detent-maybe a sign of Trunion Bearings having groves in the races of the bearings....best thing would be a rebuild to check everything & also repack knuckles with grease.

Did you see or feel the detent? If you feel it, what are the circumstances? See it.. where?

Very typical sign of worn knuckle bearings. The wheels are streight most of the time you are driving so they wear more there and a detent forms. Depending on how bad it is, it might be time for a knuckle rebuild or just drive it if it is still fairly small.

The Rest Of The Story

Droped the tie rod awhile ago to turn wheel independent of other. very noticable spot on left knuckel less so on right. Worn trunion bearings sounds right and knuckels have never been rebuilt. guess its time. Will get parts and have party. Thanks for input.

Valuable resource for the job:

You can get the bearings from Motion industries or from CarQuest. Motion carries Timken, CarQuest caries Koyo. Both were used by TEQ from the factory. If you get the bearings from the stealership they will be either Timken or Koyo re-boxed into a Toyota branded box.. they will cost almost double.

Let us know when you are going to tackle it. It will probably wait untill after the SCC if you want to.
