Steering box adjustment seal?

Pretty easy to damage the seal on the adjustment screw if 34 years old. Can order the part but has anyone used a soft copper gasket or rubber grommet instead whilst waiting for the delivery?

RedHead Steering uses a nylock nut upside down.
