Is there a secret to getting the steering arm off? I've been through 2 end pullers (screws keep buckling) and I've tried using the 'fork' type puller with no results. The thing won't budge.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Which steering arm are you talking about???

pittman?

Knuckle arms?

steering arms are on teh knuckle...are you trying to get the tre's off? i ask cause you say fork tool? i've always had success, albeit testing my patience, with chisels, removing from the knuckle. on the tre's i've used a combo of heat and pickle forks.

Tie Rod End

Sorry for the poor post previously.

I was having trouble disconnecting the tie rod joint from the steering arm. I destroyed two adjustable type pullers and mangled the tie rod boot with the fork tool and still was unable to get it free. As luck would have it Auto Zone had a puller that looks remarkably like the SST shown in the FSM. That finally did the trick.

However, having destroyed the tie rod boot, I soon found out from CDan that Toyota does not supply the boots and that in order to replace it you must by a new tie rod end which includes a new tie rod as well since apparently there has been some redisgn on the tie rod end that requires a new rod to fit properly.

The whole reason I was seperating the joint was to check the trunion bearing preload. It was off by quite a bit after putting in new races and bearing which at least made me feel a little better for going through the headache of removing that damn tie rod end joint.

So finally I managed to get the knuckle and everything back together with a make shift boot from Napa until the parts from CDan arrive next year. Tomorrow I hope to tackle the repack on the left side. Should be a piece of cake as long as I don't run into the same deal as I did today.

Thanks to everyone for helping another newbie make it through another successful knuckle rebuild; a right of passage of sorts I reckon as a 60 owner.

Happy new year

Mike
