In case anyone is shopping around, just wanted to share my thoughts. Yesterday I took my new-to-me 2013 LX570 in for the 60k service, along with diff and transfer case fluid swaps.. I was given a brand new 2019 GX460 as a loaner. After driving it for a day, I have to say that I greatly preferred my older LX over the brand new GX- if i were to shop for them both side by side, i'd take the used LX all day, even without considering that it would save 15-20k. The new GX definitely was a big improvement over the 06 GX I had a few years back, but I could see where the extra 40k goes in the LX.
The GX seats felt a bit softer, but I felt the handling, acceleration, overall interior quality, comfort, etc. was just leaps and bounds behind the LX, even with 6 years and 60k more on the road.
I know some people don't see/feel the benefit, but i felt the value in moving up a class was pretty apparent between the two.

Ssssh, keep that info to yourself sir. Selfishly, I want to keep the $$ down on used LX/LC for years to come. The new GX is a beast and should be treated as such—btw, I own both and agree but c’mon man, easy on the compliments ;)

I had the same impression back when I test drove a 2016 GX and then the 2013 LC (which I bought).

I tried to get my wife into an LX, but she said it was too big and she didn’t love the looks. Ended up in a GX, and we love it. Reminds me a lot of my 100 series but just updated. Size is similar. It’s really a great vehicle in its own right.

That said, I still lust after a 200 for myself.

I switched from a GX to an LC (same year) and find the LC far, far superior in all respects apart from luxuriousness of interior materials

OK guys. For those of you that have/had both, what are the advantages of the GX over the LX?

I've owned a V8 4Runner, LX470, and now LX570. My parents have had a GX470 for over a decade and I've had lots of opportunity to drive it.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade my LX for a GX. But the GX does have it's advantages. Namely size and agility that helps its drivability. It's a much lighter car on its feet and still silky smooth in its ride and motions. Would feel much more at home tackling traffic in the city. It's lighter and easier handling relative to our full size and full weight bruisers.

Off roading, I feel the GX would is better sized for most trails. The Land Cruiser would have the edge in technical ability however.

It’s smaller. That’s it.

The GX is narrower, but that is its only advantage off-road. The LX and LC have a smaller turning circle than the GX. The GX has poor ground clearance and a horrid approach angle. If you are going to put on a front bumper and lift the suspension, then the GX would be good to go. But if you are going to keep it stock, the LX with it’s smaller turning circle and AHC is better off-road IMO.

Thanks all - even considering that awful front overhang of the LX?

The GX has the same overhang. The LX has the height adjustable suspension that lets you raise the vehicle a couple inches. The GX starts with lower clearance to begin with and it doesn’t have AHC. I believe the GX has rear air suspension, so you can raise the rear, but not the front.

We have both. 2014 LX and 2015 GX Luxury (wife). The GX Is subjectively better “looking”, has a much better third row setup, and a tighter turning radius as stated above. The LX is better in just about every other way. We generally haul the family around on weekends in the GX and its amazing what a step down it is. We bought both used in the past year and the price difference was only about 6k. She loves her GX though. I’m not allowed to touch it.

You misread what I wrote and what you wrote is actually incorrect — the LX has a tighter turning circle. It has a 19.35’ turning radius.

The GX has a larger turning radius of 20.55’.

I did misread. Is that with or without turn assist on the LX? I haven't measured it, but the GX seems to turn tighter. I could see it being tighter with turn assist on.

That is without turn assist.

I've never understood why some of these Japanese SUVs have such horrible turning specs. This is one of the reasons I'm dumping the 2002 RX300 - if it turns in 44ft then you're lucky. The LX/LC is about 39ft and the GX is about 41ft. Acura MDX/RDX are in the 39ft range and the Honda Pilot is about 40ft. Most Mercedes SUVs are in the 38ft range except the G that is over 44 ft. The Wrangler 2 door has a 34.5 ft turning radius and the 4 door is 40ft. The Grand Cherokee is a hair over 35.

Why does the LX turn sharper than the GX?
