This morning my 98 J100 wouldn't start. After a bit of troubleshooting, it appears to be something with the automatic transmission shift lever. If it won't start, I can pull and push the transmission lever (while still officially in Park) a few times and the truck will start. It seems to be an intermittent problem. Could something like the shift lock override switch impact this? If so, how easy is it to replace?

I guess after 310k miles something could have worn out.

Someone posted recently about a problem with the neutral safety switch. I don't think it's difficult to replace, if that is related to your issue.

A little bummed on second thought. I replaced my starter and it may not have been the problem in the first place.

While not you 're problem right now, you're ahead of the game having replaced the starter on your rig as its a 98 that would be coming soon.

Any issues with breaking the transmission when replacing? My Toyota dealer is a little nervous in replacing this. I though it was just plug and play?
