It appears the Starter motor on my 4.2TD is dead, and the Spanish dealer over here wants nearly 500 Euros for a new one. Is there any others that will fit which could be a bit more cost effective?

A couple of options here.

OK, yes UK WALES EVEN WETTER, especialy here near the West coast.

The problem is solved. After charging the batteries for 24 hours, I turned the key and Voila! It must have been happening due to excessivly low charge in the batteries.

Oh well, Thanks to everyone for their input and help

I am much relived for you. I had a suspicion that it was the batteries that why I went on about. I suspect though that charging will only cure this for a while, check they are toped up have a look at this site it has an amazing wealth of information on every aspect of batteries. http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/index.htm Depending on battery type its fully charged state of charge will very and this may give you an indication of how healthy it is. It may be worth considering that the large amount of money saved by not having to replace the starter goes towards 2 new batteries. This will give you a piece of mind and should last a number of years, a good investment. I suspect that winters are colder there than we think, temperature has a large affect on available voltage the above site will illustrate this, it even explains all about all the different types of batteries available and their pros and cons. Great news any way.
