My wife's 2000 has an intermittent issue where, on occasion, the starter clicks but doesn't turn. Other times it turns slowly, and other times it starts normally. Is this an indicator of a starter going bad? It stopped doing this for about 2 months, and is doing it again.

Battery is a year old and tests fine. Terminal connections are tight.

VERY common with the 2UZ engine, it's the contacts in the starter. It's in the FAQ.

yep I have the same issue with my 2000lx470 might do it this weekend... I've pulled the intakes enough times not to be concerned but still not something my old ass is looking forward to doing... climbing all up in the engine bay hope'n I have all the tools I need once I'm there...

Not many tools needed. A few sockets and a wrench. I did this a while back. I labeled eeerthang and snapped pics of what I was taking apart. I made sure I covered the ports when I took the manifold off. I split the manifold into two parts. My cousin, being a master tech over at Toyota, told me that was not a good idea. Put eeerthang back together. No issues. I decided on not just replacing the contacts and getting a new reman denso starter. I didn't want to take the chance on it being something other than the contacts and having to pull it apart again.

That was my first time working and taking stuff apart on a 2UZ engine.

I gave myself a week to do this. Most fellas can pull it off in a few hours or a day. I learned a lot. Fun.
