'96 taco - 183,000+ miles. upon startup i get a loud squealing noise that stops after 2-3 min. i've siliconed the belts - no difference. do i need to replace a belt or is it something else?

no cracks that i can see. problably near the end of their life... since they're the originals.

i would replace the belts, or it could possibly be one of the pulleys for the belt tensioners. mine did the same thing for a while, then the ac tensioner pulley seized up

What engine?

Does it change pitch with rpm's?

Next time you start it make sure everything that is suppose to be turning is.

After you confirm this, replace belt/s.

eng is 3.4 orig. if by 'pitch' you mean the squealing gets louder/higher pitched the answer is no. Also after paying closer attention this morning the squealing lasts less than 30sec. much shorter than previous est.

the h2o pump has never been changed. why? it is not running hot so i didnt think the h2o pump could be the problem.

Water pumps can make all sorts of noises, they can make a lot of racket and still work fine.

Have the timing belts ever been changed? way overdue if not.

Did you make sure everything was turning on the front of the engine?
With everything off are any of the idler pulleys loose? Try wiggling them back and forth.

the local mechanic told me the timing belt was way overdue also. belts have no cracks as far as i can tell. everything seems to be turning as it should. i'll check pulleys tomorrow.
