Driving down a mild dirt road in the McCullough Peaks looking for wild horses outside of Cody WY, I had a loud squeal / screech for a bout 2 second and then a loud pop.

After that the vehicle drove fine.

Any ideas?

Given the road, is it possible a rock popped up into the belt?

Literally sitting out on the road now looking the engine over before I drive any deeper into this desert

I don't know, if it is in fact a pulley, it could seize up and break the drive belt. Do you have any more info about it? Is it from front of engine, etc? Does it get louder/quieter with RPM change? Does it sound better or worse with AC on or off?

I made it out alive!

Yes this was the first time I had it in high heat at slow mo. I had also been up in the Pryor Mountains for several days bouncing over rocks before hand. Problem began in the McCulloughs however.

Now that I'm back in Jackson Hole and driving around town (with building to echo sound back for me) I have more to add.

There is now a continuous whine. It does change with AC. When I turn it off it goes down. But it still wines with AC off.

It also seems to change when I turn the steering wheel as well now.

None of this was apparent until the screech an pop in the desert.

X2. Idler pulley is the cheapest and most common replaced, but spin the pulleys once you take the serpentine belt off.

1407driver, let me know if you are ever looking to head out that way and Ill meet you up there if I'm not on the road (I'm a wildlife photographer and so travel ALOT). Always looking to get out on a trail.

So is the consensus that my serpentine belt should be pulled and replaced and check corresponding components when I do?

Thanks guys!

if it changes with the steering wheel turning it is most likely the power steering pump.
