I have been shopping for a spot welder. There are some deals available on ebay, but I don't know if i'm buying junk. I buy tools for their durability, and try to stay away from junk. This welder will not be used daily, but I want something that will perform when I need it with the minimum of downtime. Suggestions? Thanks. Cary
I've used the Miller clamp type spot welders with good success after trying a few of the cheaper alternatives that were a waste of time & $. Still takes some practice though.
Why not just use a regular welder with a decent duty cycle? I suppose a spot welder would be nice if you're doing a large amount of items, but I've found my regular welder works just dandy for any spot welding I need to do.
I was looking at a spot welder myself, and asked a friend about it. He asked me: "Well, what are you going to use it on?"
"Umm.....stuff!"
"How often?"
"Umm...shuddup! I want an excuse to buy a new toy!"

Cary, I have a clamp style spot welder that I picked used. It was made by Miller for Grainger and I have installed the longer 'fender' tongs for the increased reach. If you are interested in testing it to gage what you like & don't, stop by.
I bought a Miller 10 KvA spot welder a few years ago just like this one. It will spot weld up to 11 ga galvanized real well. My first choice was an Acme 15 KvA, but the price was right on the Miller.
