Here what I have. It seems that the t cases are slightly different. Can I use the h42 case attached to the back of my h55? Because my old t case is pooched. I tried reading 5 times over the article but Im a little slow. I also dont read that much.
I suppose I can try to dry fit it and if eeverything looks like its all lined up and bolts together, why not?
It will fit as long as it has this casting divot to fit the fifth gear oiler cup. The cases did change a bit the bearing on the back of the trans changed in size I think and also the depth of the spacer
For those upgrading to a h55 your split case must have this oiler cup provision.
For people adding a later 38mm case to a h55 this hole needs to be plugged.
Some older h42 cases don’t have the oiler cup provision in that case you can use the front half of your case as long as that thrust bearing hasent spun to badly.
I think it was dan at 4wheel auto that told me even if they had spun he still uses the case he just epoxys the thrust bearing in place.
So I will have to re-use my tcase with the h42 gears. But knowing that "Dan" just epoxies the trust washer into place is kind of re-assuring. On the tcase side of course.
Top case is a 1980 to 82 and is too early to fit to the h55. However from what I understand the gears will fit from it into your case. Did the thrust washers spin on your case? It kinda looks it did. I don’t know how well the epoxy works. I think I would try it though, it would also make the case so much easier to line up when your putting it together.
So the h55 on the right and the h42 on the left. The h55 output gear has an oil seal on it and the h42 doesn't, the oil seal was on the small spacer. Nothing seems to be even close to working for me.
You’re ahead of me here I haven’t got to my swap yet. I have a older split case that I can have a look at when I get home tonight. I will see what I can find out. A couple other guys here have done a swap maybe they have some idea. @seapotato@Rigpig
So I put every thing back together today with my old front half of the 83 h55 34mm case and the new to me rear section from the 80-82 h42 tcase. It was a bit of a wrestle to get it together. I was trying to bolt up the shifting linkage because I think the tcase is stuck in neutral or I fxxxed up. I will know by tomorrow. Crossing my fingers :/
Forgot to mention that I used the stock out put gear from the h55 because its the same gear as the h42. You do not use the H42 rear out put gear or spacer. The high range is the same DUH! Its the low range your changing. You don't have to take the front of the tcase off of the tranny. But I did.
I don't remember having any issues. Only took front piece of tcase off the tranny because I was doing seals (and that fxxxing needle bearing in front output), otherwise I'd have left it alone.
All the guts swapped over, gave a spin by hand to make sure I hadn't done something smrt and then buttoned it up.
I minor update. I was out getting fire wood with my trailer and I sure feel the lower gears when I am driving down logging road switch backs with no need for brakes. With a full cord.
